I've rarely needed to torrent on my phone. I might check out the uTorrent app next time I need to. I don't think there was one last time I had need!

Then again, if she can't understand that different things are different because they are not the same, then I'd just give up and leave. There is just no point trying, as you've made pretty clear dozens of times with dozens of examples already.

Is that because she has the spare €400 and really appreciates the WP interface and integration with her existing Microsoft accounts and software? Or is it because today she quite likes the colours and will probably change her mind when one of her friends gets something else?

Some people just don't care enough about the internet or technology.

None of her friends have smartphones and she uses a MacBook Pro...

I think this demonstrates the point of this thread. That a lot of people who have smartphones don't really know or care about smartphones. At most, they want to be able to get email on the move, if they want anything "smart" from it at all.

The younger daughter bought an Xperia, but she doesn't have a Google account and she doesn't have any apps on it and she doesn't have a data rate on her pre-pay card.

My youngest future brother-in-law got a Sensation from his provider, again, no data contract and he still stores the contacts on the SIM card.

And something tells me she's never synced her contacts with the machine, has she?

It's clearly true, but why?

My round-about point was that I can't understand spending several hundred Euros on a brand new top of the range smart phone like the Lumia for absolutely no good reason.

Is it superficial fashion victims with more money than senseHTC buying phones as accessories purely because of the marketed image?

Or maybe it's not them. Maybe we've just reached the point where it's actually impossible to buy a reliable, quality and relatively inexpensive phone that isn't "smart". Since I love my gadgets, I confess I've not looked at the, err, "dumb" options.

Because they listened to the salesman in the shop?

That's something else I never do. Salesmen are there to sell you the most profitable item they can. The more they screw you, the better their commission. Who would trust them?

I think most people buy on-line these days anyway. That's why all the high street stores are closing.

When an iPhone 4S, Samsung Galaxy SIII or Nokia Lumia costs 1€ with a contract and a standard candybar type non-smartphone costs 50€, most people will get the smartphone, because it looks better than the more expensive button phones...

This point came a while ago. I wouldn't have my Galaxy Note if it wasn't for this. Last year, I wanted another Sony C902 or similar. The camera was great, battery life was good and it was quite functional in terms of to-do lists, calendar/appointments and even would browse the web on the extremely rare occasion that I need to check a cinema time or whatever.

However, to buy the nearest equivalent was £150. Which wouldn't have been the end of the world, but the reliable, proven models from both Nokia and Sony had all been retired and the stuff available was all newish and had no track record to speak of. Also the people in the store (my mates) were unable to give me an warranty info due to the complete lack of any sales to go on for returns data.

So I purchased a Galaxy Note because I could get a £20 a month contract in a surprise one-off deal. I have since grown to love it, but I would have had a dumb phone had there been an obvious option beyond the £10 emergency phone your gran buys for the car.

I went on the carphonewarehouse website after reading this thread yesterday, and there simply are very few dumb phones about, unless you buy on eBay. The pitch to customers would probably be along the lines that you can always use the internet features if you need to at a later date. The contracts did not necessarily include data. I guess from a manufacturers perspective they are giving all the support they can to their smart phones as that is where the profit is and they cannot compete in the dumb phone market against the latest cheap phones from China. So while Android smartphones are probably outselling iPhones, the users are simply using them as simple phones, which might also explain the low internet access from android phones compared to iPhones.

I would rather have an old top of the range phone than a brand new budget phone. Build quality, cheap phones are [LIFTED], unless they're cheap only because they're old.

I spoke to daughter Nr. 1 again and she saw the Lumias on one of her assignments, the staff were using them as company phones. She prefers the design to the iPhone and the Galaxy SIII, it is more square and she likes the way it works...
