It was freaking awesome and anyone who says otherwise, is other blind, deaf or too much of a "fan" to let go and just enjoy themselves. I had a massive grin on my face virtually the whole time. The cast were all superb and Simon Pegg does an amazing job. He takes the piss just the right amount and if you've seen MI:III and/or Alias you should've been expecting his take on Scotty.
No doubt there are forums full of geeks worldwide, screaming about the destruction of canon, but this is the best movie I've seen since Dark Knight and one of the best examples of how to reboot a franchise, ever made.
Wolfie, you've missed the point. Star Trek is about people working together, but it's also about racism and TOS never shied away from that. If you wanna get pedantic, according to canon, humans distrusted Vulcans for a long time after first contact. That wasn't the only problem. Look at the Klingons, Bajorans, Cardassians, Romulans and any number of other people who had long histories of not getting along, but that evolved over time.
Chekov had comparatively masses of time to get a lock with the boys, but none with Amanda. If you expected this movie to be TOS, you've missed the point. If you expected this movie to bring the fun back to Trek and bring in non-Trekkies by the millions, you're on the money.

SPOILER WARNING!!!
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
TBH I think a fresh approach was needed. The "canon" universe was starting to look a tad ridiculous and was running out of Steam. Avoiding the "canon" universe and changing history gives the new writers a lot of freedom to re-write the story and make a DECENT film (which after Insurrection and Nemesis, was sorely needed - personally I think TNG peaked at First Contact). IMHO, the fresh approach was most welcome, and highly enjoyable.
Besides, since Vulcan has now been destroyed, perhaps alternate Voyager will be saved from the horror of having Tuvok as Security Chief! (What kind of Security Chief gets shot the very moment he steps out of the turbolift!?).

SPOILER WARNING PLEASE!!!!!! Would you mind editing your post? Totally agreed though. The primary concern for anyone making a movie, is that it's a good movie in and of itself. Given X-Men and Star Trek are about as old as each other, the weight of their respective franchises is similar and despite both recent offerings straying from canon, one movie clearly got it right and one didn't. Live long and prosper

SPOILERS IN WHITE!
I'm not sure what time line we have been left on though.
I though TOS started with everything as it is at the end of the film? i.e. Vulcan was destroyed and Romulus wasn't.
I discussed the timeline thing with my friend but we decided that the alternate timeline at the end of the film is the ACTUAL timeline in TOS.

Interesting point. The old (Trek fan) me, would get into it with you, but the current me isn't bothered. The movie was awesome, the next one should be even better and I don't imagine there are any plans for a new TV show at this point, so it's largely irrelevant to me.

More spoilers in white. OK, having done a bit of reading I have found out the following. Firstly, it didn't sound right when I said that Romulus had been destroyed because I couldn't remember that at all. Turns out that, as a prequel to the film, there was a four part comic series released called Star Trek: Countdown.
It was set 8 years after Nemesis. The galaxy is under threat from a star about to go supernova. Romulus mines a particular material and Spock suggests that they can use the material to create red matter and send it into the star to form a black hole and consume the star.
This goes wrong and Romulus is destroyed by the star (I now remember the scene in the film but it was very quick so I didn't fully remember what was going on).
The black hole that is created sucks in the Romulan ship and that starts the whole alternative timeline (one we haven't seen before)! The alternative timeline starts at the point where the USS Kelvan (Kevlan) is destroyed with George Kirk on board.
Hmm... potentially, this means that an entirely new series can be written that has it's own entirely new timeline. No one has to worry about past events because they haven't happened yet. No one has to worry about plot holes in "future" TNG/Voyager/DS9 episodes because they happened in a different reality.
Coincidence or clever writing to open up the franchise from the start?I know which one I'm going for! Anyway, enough debating for now

Yeah, I've found loads of sources but I'm a little confused. If you look at the Play list, there are two 104 page books which sound identical except for the cover and they have different publisher and authors! I like the one with the split screen cover. However, I've also found I can buy the 4 individual issues second hand. I don't like buying second hand because I've been burned before, but it's another option... Any suggestions which is the "right" choice?

Look again, they're both the same book - so go with Amazon for £5.99 with free delivery! EDIT - Actually, both Play and Amazon seem clueless on dates - Amazon are saying pre-order it for 08/05/09 , while Play suggest it'll take weeks to arrive

Yeah, I noticed that too. I'll probably just go for the cheapest, and I have an Amazon wish list that's kinda long already. I expect the content is the same, but it bugs me that there are two versions with different publishers and covers. Which one is the "original"?!

Amazon.co.uk and Play.com have "notify me" options available, which will tell you when the film is available for pre-order. Personally I'll be getting the Blu-Ray version ASAP, now I just need some decent speakers to do the film justice! Amazon.co.uk Play.com (DVD) Play.com (Blu-ray)

Saw it today. I thought it was pretty good. All the characters were much as expected and well performed. Probably Chekov was the weakest; his accent was a bit farcical at times.
The plot was... a little stretched in places. "How did you find me?" "It was in the script"...
Uhura was hot; which is nice.
