I've been working in techi jobs since 1987 and I've worn suits or trousers, shirt, tie, good shoes (not trainers, boots, casual etc.) for 20 of those years!

I'm a techie and own two suits, but wear neither to work...Currently in jeans and an old rugby shirt, complete with dangling ear phones, tufty chin and frizzy hair... When I had my interview I bought my first suit, my boss to be was wearing smartish beige trousers and a polo shirt, completely non-formal, but I didn't feel over dressed. If one of us comes into the office now wearing a suit it looks weird, and on more than one occasion we have shouted at someone for being in the lab, only to find that it was one of us who was wearing a suit... However, my American equivalents do wear suits...

Apple. Edit: Ok, in seriousness I have never worn a suit to an interview, and every job I have applied for, I have got. Although on occasion I have actually been asked not to wear a suit, and to dress in casual attire. I would, however say wear a suit, or at least the suit trousers and a shirt, because it can make all the difference.

The comments I hear most from my boss about people who have been for interviews is when they come in jeans and t-shirt etc...
No matter what the job is I will always go to an interview in a suit. I never wear them any other times (apart from maybe weddings). The first impression is the most important and if you turn up dressed down then it doesn't look good even before you open your mouth.

Wear a suit
I have been a sys admin and although the job involved crawling around desks and under floors for the interview I wore a suit.
Haveing also been the interviewer I would espect anyone I saw to make a bit of an effort - afterall I may send them to the Customer to do more than just fix a box so I need to know they can smarten up.

Went with the suit, which seemed appropriate. Nothing definite yet, but it was very positive. They've actually got me sorting out a customer server remotely for them already, so if I get it right I think I'm sorted. I'm just waiting for the passwords.

Thanks I think they're slightly reckless letting me lose on a customer already, but it's all looking good so far.

Good luck to you for sure and I do hope you get the job but I have to agree. What sort of outfit lets people who aren't even on the payroll yet loose on actual production servers? Jon

If anyone is trying to book a holiday on-line tomorrow and they get a screen full of SQL errors, I didn't do it. Couldn't have been me, right? I don't even work there.

Jeepers People, let's have a little bit of "Glass Half Full" thinking!! Ever considered that perhaps the company don't let just anybody loose on customer servers? It's more likely that they were so wow'd by our JJs skills and expertise they wanted to make sure he wasn't too good to be true before they hire him!!! Mr R and I both thought that was a good sign, an indication of trust and confidence. A little bit of PMA goes a long, long way
