However I know that MS are doing extended support for it beyond that date for very large customers

As far as my Freeway Action work goes, I have specifically stated that I will no longer be supporting IE6. If it works, then that’s just gravy, but I refuse to go out of my way any more. It’s counter productive and a waste of my time.

It's nice that you can do that. The problem comes when one's customers are still using IE6 and they start complaining, or worse: start looking elsewhere for a compatible product...

Have they addressed any of the bugs? Have they addressed it’s inability to render standards compliant HTML? Does it fully support the DOM model? How about transparency in 24-bit PNGs without using hacks?

I think the answer is a resounding “no”. In short, this browser has not been fixed. It has not had any revisions since 2004 apart from various “fixes” to get it to run on more modern OSes. It’s bloody ancient.

The browser has NEVER been fixed but that's not the point support is still available for it.

What was the big hoo-haa last year then? There was something about end of life for IE6 and a large portion of the web community was partying... :?

They fix security bugs. Rendering to what Microsoft though HTML and CSS should be isn't a security issue... :?

Microsoft put IE7 into forced upgrades a long while back. YouTube are nudging people away from IE6.

Looks like 13 July 2010 could be the EOL date.

What happens when you replace a machine? Can you still specify Windows 95?

I guess as long as you have a disk and a licence you can do it...

I tried to install Windows 98 on my main PC recently... (I was bored!) and it wouldn't install. Windows 9x doesn't like having more than 1GB of RAM, so good luck getting 95 to work on... I nearly said anything modern, but let's just say anything. Full stop ;) :P

One big problem is finding drivers for modern network cards. You might be able to live with 16 colour VGA graphics and no sound, but a lack of network connectivity really sucks.

If I really needed '98 I'd try and virtualise it. Unfortunately, the only software I have that might prefer '95 talks to some hardware by directly accessing the parallel port, which isn't even there on most modern machine.
