Here's a good parking story: Older cars at a Devon council could be charged double. No doubt the people making that decision either earn stacks of money and/or have company cars.

^^^Unless they give everyone "green" company cars I think it is wholly inappropriate to do this. My first car was registered in 2000. It was a second hand fiesta. Charging £1/day wouldn't just make it uneconomical, it would make it more difficult. I personally, in retaliation, use public transport and just there late and leave early, given it took longer by public transport.

Better would be to make everyone who lives less than a mile to pay £1/day unless there were adequate reasons for exemption. Anyone living 1-3 miles but easily able to reach there via public transport 50p/day.

Having said all that, it's probably still far cheaper to pay £1/day and use petrol than use public transport.

Yes it is way cheaper. My local bus company charge £3.20 for a day pass and £1.7 for a single.

That is of course assuming there's even room on the bus at peak hours...

Here in Germany, if you have a car without Euro 3 or better, you can't drive into towns at all. You have to stop outside and use park and ride.

You have to get a windscreen sticker from the TÜV (MOT), which is colour coded. If you car doesn't qualify for one of the Euro norms, you can't enter the town, if you car does qualify, but you haven't bothered to get the sticker, you can't enter the town.

I had a particle filter put on my Mondeo, so I get a 4 sticker, instead of 3, so my tax is also cheaper.
