I'm fine with that. Just stop going on about it, and we'll get on absolutely like a house on fire. :D

I use a BB for a personal phone and I love it, but then I'm the kind of boring person who enjoys reading The Times*. I've used both the Bold and the Storm 2, and whilst I prefer the Storm I didn't find the keyboard annoying (rather useful actually), although the trackball did get a tad tiresome (I'm told the optical trackpads are much better).

*although I'm currently not buying it on principle, and am reading the Guardian or Independent instead.

Ok folks.

It all seems friendly enough but there were a couple of points raised about the forum; we do let things go here because everyone should be able to accept each others views and opions and you're allowed to have differening views and opinions, thats why we have a forum.

As for: this is appearing on the front page and no-one cares; either contact a mod or admin if you feel something needs to be done, or live with it. I`m not going to go moving threads around unless it`s really annoying people or it`s obviously in the wrong forum. Most of the time something is posted in the Meeting Place because the poster feels like a wider range of people may have an interest and therefore an input into the discussion.

If you feel like you can`t cope with other people having a strong opinion on something you don`t agree with, then please click the cross at the top of your browser. (Please note that users on mobile devices or alternative browsers may not see a cross, please don`t shout at me for using Firefox as my primary browser)

Back on topic, I should`ve stated we use a range of Blackberries at work, and they are used with a BES.

Finally, threads go off topic, it happens everyday, it may be a thread you have an interest in, it may not. Either way, that's life.

Anyway, I'm all up for a bit of a debate providing it stays friendly. :)

I always wondered how good other phones are with push emails compared to BB.

I had HTC Desire to play with for a day so I did some testing sending emails (gmail to gmail) between BB and HTC.
BB => HTC takes 10-16 seconds
HTC => BB takes 5-10 seconds

BTW, sms takes about 4s from phone to phone so BB and HTC with push on gmail are very enough alternatives, especially when communicating with somebody abroad.

Can somebody provide figures for iphone push emails (gmail to gmail) for comparison?

I have never tried measuring time for BBM chat messages so I might do that sometime.

It means nothing to me, as I don't have a Blackberry, but I just got an email fron Daniweb saying that BES Express is free. I thought I'd stick it in here in case someone found it useful.

New Blackberry and Android don't create much of a buzz at launch.

Not sure what to make of this TBH. I've always thought BB's were more of a corporate thing than consumer so you're not likely to see huge queues outside shops for them. Be interesting to see how it's done maybe in a year or so when a lot of business contracts have come to be renewed. The Droid 2 may be suffering from the 'fragmentation' of the Android market - there are so many nice Android phones to buy, that launching a new one that doesn't really have a huge USP is always going to be difficult.

I've just spend 3 days troubleshooting bis on a companies blackberries trying to connect to exchange (they won't pay the extra monthly rental for bes), all the iphones connected in less than 30 seconds.

From my experience businesses very rarely provide new BB models to their employees. In my company (Prudential) it is common to see people with models that are 4-5 years old, I hardly every see a new model and if I do it is really senior people who have them. I know people from Capita and it is exactly same over there, archaic devices are pretty much a rule in my circles.

And people commenting here usually mention older devices too.

Look at Saspro's comment, they don't even have BES
Everybody is doing things on cheap these days.
BTW, I didn't know you can get emails from Exchange to BB over BIS. Is it really possible? :o

Regarding Torch, I think it is going to be very popular because it has big screen and a physical keyboard. I a survey 44% of BB user said the physical keyboard is a must for them so a device that combines those two features is bound to be popular. Not to mention new OS6 that people were crying for- for ages now.

I has to set up BES on occasion. That's probably a blessing in disguise. It looks like its development stopped about 1987.

I suspect if you can get a BIS account onto the handset, you can then set the Exchange server up as a secondary IMAP account, assuming the Exchange admins have switched IMAP on. I don't think you can set an Exchange account up instead of BIS though. Why would RIM let you do that when they have BES licences to sell?

We've got BES but the company we were supporting didn't (I've just managed to get them to move their mail to the exchange server they already had).
BIS works with Exchange, you just set the account to use your OWA address (make sure you know your mailbox name & use https)

The problem with BES express though is the monthly charge. The software is free but it's £10 per handset per month to use it.

That is a nasty extra. For a large enterprise it could add up.

I think my company spent over £5 million on BB's and line charges last year in the UK (excluding worldwide data roaming) and they have a smorgasboard of differing BB models. People keep on "dropping" them to try and get a newer handset

I am probably thinking it is high compared to a home users bill. An extra £10 on top would be nasty. Though I would imagine that they probably do a lot more email traffic so calls might actually be a lot less, and so the overall cost per user is actually quite reasonable.
