I'm annoyed that Nationwide are going to start charging to use their debit card abroad. No fees abroad was one of the best things about their current account.

I have been with TSB and then Lloyds for nearly 20 years and have not had any real complaints about them. They have been a little difficult this last year. Nothing too awkward, but all the banks are much the same. I do think that we need more competition by breaking all the banks up.

What is the security like when you make transfers? Do you get a card reader or token device?
One more thing: what file format can you get your statements in?

Local Credit Union.

When I had my breakdown the normal banks treated me like sh!t.

They will never have any of my money ever again.

If it was VISA I might have got one. I've been to a few (okay, very few) places that don't take Master Card.

They say no fees etc, but the exchange rate is +2.5% I wonder how that compares to normal banks. Plus there's no mention of getting unused money back. It could sit in their account for years earning you no interest at all (not an issue at the moment I agree).

With normal debit/credit card you are looking at 2.75%.

The difference with Canton is that you don't pay fees for cash machine withdrawals.

True. We moved our mortgage from Market Harbrough BS to Santander (Abbey) because of a better interest rate. However they are far less flexible. With MHBS we could make overpayments online. With Abbey we have to go into the branch to do it. What a pain.

On Oli's recommendation I've switched to Smile, and so far I like it. Unlike my previous bank, they're not pestering me with marketing messages (and for the record, I'd set my preferences with my last bank to no marketing messages).

Bank of Scotland - now HBoS

Been with most of the Jock banks and will move when the wife dictates - more specifically, when the wife finds a better deal ;) She's not happy our current bank has stopped paying us a fiver per month instead of the previous interest payment scheme. She is currently negotiating deals all over the place.
