If it says stop then by all means carry on if those are you wishes, just don't complain if you get a fine or endorsement. Same with most traffic offences really.

What's the standard reaction after having the front of your car knocked off and a hefty hike in insurance premiums following an incident involving an unseen, and consequently low-flying, motorcyclist?

Or you could assume that the people who decided it needed to be a Stop not a Give Way knew what they were talking about...
I could also assume that given that I've only ever seen one Stop sign, which was looking rather worn, that they simply can't be bothered any more and just splash out Give Way signs at every junction? ;-)

Seriously. If a junction is that bad that they've actually put a 'Stop' sign out, and yet you still need a 'Stop' sign to tell you to this, then quite frankly you shouldn't be driving.

They tend to put "Stop" signs, and the solid white line at the junction, if there is an accident black spot. There's tons of the buggers round here, as some of the windy country lanes just south of Maidstone have almost zero visibility at junctions unless you actually properly stop, and then edge forward very tentatively.

I don't understand how edging out tentitively allows you to see better?

There's a few blind junctions onto fast roads around here. Statistically, you're far less likely to die if you simply close your eyes and drive at them full throttle, because you'll spend far less time plonked across the traffic than if you "edge out tentatively".

Because, while the traffic isn't heavy, it can be fast. If you can just stick your bonnet out a little, you have a better chance of seeing something coming, and of them seeing you. Trying to do that in a "give way" situation, where you hope to approach the junction in second and still keep going is all but impossible.

Some of the junctions I'm talking about have buildings right on the junction - all four corners, with no footpaths and no sight lines to speak of. Occasionally, you literally have to look over your left or right shoulder to see down the road you're trying to turn into. You have to rely on factors such as being able to hear oncoming traffic, or your car and personal acceleration skills match Lewis Hamilton.
