First Assist - spamming my phone line. Asking for the wife and claiming to be calling for the RAC, and when’s a good time to call. I usually give a late time (after 7pm) which is pretty much true as she’s never home from work before 6pm. They never do, and always call during the day. 1471 gives me an 0845 number.

If you have caller ID screen all 0845 numbers and ignore. Until they use a number that you can respond to ignore them.

We don’t have that, unfortunately. Been given an email address from the RAC to send complaints. I don’t have a log of the calls, but I’ve been fielding a lot of them over the last couple of weeks. So have to wait for my wife to get home so I can send off our membership details and see what’s what.

Caller ID is very useful but unfortunately they all seem to price it too high as a way of keeping the headline line rental down.

No just a sh|t day but it summarises what I hate. It's a Monday, we know it's gonna be busy and we're down by two doctors. We've known about one doctor being off today for about a month (training day) and the other is off due to family bereavement (known about for a week). So common sense would dictate that we either limit appointments today to on-the-day only, or increase the anticipated number. Nobody does anything.

We guarantee a same day appointment if you ring in before 9am and naturally, being short staffed, the receptionists booked anyone who rang in as extra patients for each doctor for the end of their surgery. No problemo. You then have those who ring after 9 and want a same-day appointment. What should happen is that they should be offered another day (eg tomorrow) or if it's urgent, they're supposed to call the duty doc and check with them before booking in. Duty doc is another doc today. So why the fudge did they keep ringing me for the extra appointments? They needed to ring the duty doc, except they kept pestering me. Not on. Furthermore, any queries, questions or problems should go through the duty doc. So why was I getting hassled?

I can cope with the workload. I get on fine with the patients. I've no issues about the home visits. What peeves me off is that the receptionists get stressed and instead of managing it, they transfer that stress on to the doctors. I'm not the only one who's had this issue. The girls just aren't doing things the right way, and it's made worse by the practice manager who doesn't always pull her weight either.

This is what it all boils down to:piss poor management. If it were down to me, I'd performance manage them. There's a couple who just cannot cope when the tough gets going. They need to be weeded out. The problem is I'm salaried so effectively no say in the running of the practice. But I've mentioned issues like this before and nothing gets done about it. So I've got to consider whether it's worse being miserable. Only in the past 3-4 months have I felt like this. I used to love my job and in some ways, I still do. I know the bosses want to offer me partnership (having done so twice already). I'm glad I didn't accept now because I swear I would just turn into an evil dictator.

Bad management can kill any workplace. And it will.

You need to do something about it, otherwise you'll start hating the job itself. It took me a year to decide to jump ship and it's so much better now.
A few bad people can really make your life miserable :(

I actually discussed stress transference with people at work recently. The nastiest and most stressed people to deal with are some of the PAs. Usually the ones who work for the high up bods and I was adamant it's because they get stress from their bosses which they pass on to other people. Not a good thing.

IIRC she had a very fetching black & blue number on yesterday. One of those 'optical illusion' designs. There does seem to be a push to make the female weather peeps dress in a bit less frumpy fashion. Either that or it's the BBC & Met office's works parties this week :D.

Becky Hersurnameescapesme from ITV has taken to giving a very saucy wink to camera, Carol Kirkwood was very ably assisted by her bra this morning... it must be time to look at peoples' contracts or something.

The internet, as always, provides (ah, this takes me back..)

Carol Kirkwood seems to have got into down the gym in a quite radical way recently. You kind of don't expect a) A 50 year old woman to have abs like that and b) for her to be wearing a dress where you can tell she's got abs like that.
