I thought navigation systems did continue in the background. It was just location based stuff like Brightkite that updated periodically. i.e. only when you are actually moving.

I'll try and use it tonight and see... I have a feeling, that the position will update, but the navigation software won't be able to tell you to turn off or update the map location, unless it is in the foreground and I doubt it will recalculate the route, if you don't happen to turn off at the junction that it wasn't able to tell you about...

Oh, and another little snippet I picked up from a podcast this morning Facetime does not require any minutes to work. i.e. You can make a free Facetime call without dialling a telephone number first. Just like Skype.

Not that I would use it…

So why not just implement iChat or use the Skype SDK or use SIP? The internet video telephony is fractured enough, without adding yet more protocols into the mix. The more I hear about FacePalm, the less sense it seems to make...

copilot works in background mode.

I found out by mistake as I closed the app using the home button and it kept on talking to me telling me where to go.

It could also add a new dimention of the heavy breathing type phone calls

The Japanese have been doing this for years. How did I know that?

They can't have. Video calling has only just been invented.

Exactly, porn and sex services were the main drivers of video calling in japan. I am not sure of its use elsewhere, but in Japan it was a thriving before 3G was common here.

So, I tested the navigation software (Navigon) on my 3GS with iOS 4.

1. I started playing a podcast, switched to the navigation software and typed in the destination. I then let it register, that I was driving in the wrong direction (it wants to send me down a road closed for construction, when I leave the office).

2. Once it had caught up, I switched off the iPhone display. The podcast kept playing and Navigon kept giving me directions.

3. At the next red light, I double tapped the home button and selected the stocks app.

4. I then drove further. No voice directions from Navigon, podcast still playing.

5. About a mile and a half further on, I switched back to Navigon. It still said that I was at the previous junction, where I had switched to a different app! It tool about 15 seconds to get its bearings and update the display and carry on giving directions.

So, it looks like the navigation software only freezes itself, when in multi-tasking mode - which makes a certain amount of sense, I would expect that the software would be pushing memory limits on a 3GS on its own, so it probably isn't possible to multi-task it with other apps...

The versions of Navigon in the iTunes store that I can see were last updated in April. Are you sure your version has been updated to take advantage of the new mulitasking in iOS4?

Sounds to me like it is working in iOS3 mode.

Well it's obviously not iOS 4 compatable.

Look at SAS's post - copilot apparently works great in the background.

My iOS4 compatibility update to copilot downloaded about two weeks ago.

For CoPilot users: Did you get any errors about your POI database relating to the safety cameras?

Yes, it took a couple of restarts of CoPilot before it was happy. Seems the POI database was not immediately compatible with the new version. I let it update, restarted, left it a while then restarted again. After that it worked fine.
