Bloatware be gone! Korean phones will soon make carrier baggage optional

http://www.techradar.com/news/phone-and ... al-1218604

If it were simpler and less risky I'd have rooted my phone ages ago. And my tablets. I wish I'd sorted it at the start so I could have just reset back to factory settings if necessary, without backing up data or having to set everything up again the way I have it now.

Mind you, there's only so much you can do really when Google have decided their store should take precedence over whatever else is running, for instance

How do you petition the EU on this sort of thing?

Yes there's a few bits of Vodafone bloatware on my phone, but that's noting compared to the amount of Google bloatware that I don't need or want.

Hasbro is completely changing the way Transformers toys transform

http://io9.com/hasbro-is-completely-cha ... socialflow

I'm utterly clueless when it comes to design and it's application in every sense, but even I could change Transformers as a kid! They might have nipped your fingers if you weren't careful, but they were hardly a Rubik's cube or something ffs.

Buy an iPhone (no bloatware) or windows phone (very little, in my experience). If people keep on accepting phones full of bloatware, they'll keep selling them. If bloatware was actually seen as something that inhibits take-up, they'd get rid of it like a shot.

Gadget Deathwatch: 10 products destined for the scrapheap

http://www.techradar.com/news/world-of- ... 14-1218473

Radio isn't going anywhere for years.

3D TV deserves to die on it's arse.

DVD players aren't going anywhere just yet.

Portable TVs? You mean those ones kids play their games and watch TV on? Or that one in the kitchen?

Phone landlines; if Vermin weren't so fcuking useless we wouldn't need a landline.

Curved TVs are patently silly for most people.

I think that radios, cheap cameras/video recorders, portable TV landlines and sat navs can all be replaced by a smart phone. It is the restriction that you must have a landline to use broadband that will keep it alive. Though I really resent the high line rental fees for land lines when most people might only use the landline for broadband. Actually portable TV's can be replaced by identical or larger size LED TV's which weigh less than any CRT.

Even that.. I have a 4G phone I can turn into a wifi hotspot with an 'unlimited' contract. That costs me less per month than my broadband does. The peak speed obviously doesn't compare but how often are you using the peak speed vs how often are you just sending or receiving lumps of text in one form or another?

For a lot of people, a cradled 4G mifi on a decent contract actually makes just as much sense as broadband now, assuming you're paying 15 quid a month line rental before you even start paying for actual data traffic. Let alone what the situation will be in 5 or 10 years time.

Yes but many phone contracts specifically do not allow such tethering. I am allowed to tether an iPad but not a laptop or desk top.

I need a physical keyboard if nothing else, and I'd personally rather not give those two companies money if I can avoid it.

My fiancé is in a health resort at the moment and they have portable TVs in the rooms, far too small, I wouldn't trade one for a smartphone though, they are even harder to watch.

Over here, you have to ask for a telephone line, if you order a new connection, you get VOIP, unless you specifically request ISDN or analogue. I use the phone for 99% of my calls, if I can avoid calling using my smartphone, then I do.

I wouldn't replace my cameras with my smartphone, the quality is too low, they are too slow and the lenses and sensors are too inferior.

Personally I agree with you about TV and smartphones. I use my iPad for casual TV watching. Though why not get smaller LED TV's as portable TV's.

I prefer my landline as well.

The point about smart phones was in comparison to cheap point and shoot cameras. They would still struggle against a decent DSLR.
