The truth was, in 1914, Germany doesn't want war. Yeah, there's an arms race, but it's Britain who's leading it. So, why does no one admit this?

That's why. The dead. The body count. We don't like to admit the war was even partly our fault 'cause so many of our people died. And all the mourning's veiled the truth. It's not "lest we forget," it's "lest we remember." That's what all this is about — the memorials, the Cenotaph, the two minutes' silence. Because there is no better way of forgetting something than by commemorating it.

- Irwin, The History Boys (2006)

Actually there's a much better way of forgetting about something and that's NOT commemorating it. Ignoring it. Letting it fade away. His premise is bunk.

I think you miss Alan Bennett's sentiment here. Commemorating something allows us to view it in an idealised "respect for those who have passed" way. It allows us to avoid any criticism that may be laid at the door of the country's politicians at the time. We remember the war, but we don't really think about it. We are blinded by the monuments, and there is a sense that the actions are unquestioningly noble. By even suggesting "we" were at fault is seen as cheapening the actions of the men. It doesn't.

We forget that war is usually totally avoidable, and by giving honour to the men because they fight for us, we transfer some of that honour to the country as a whole, when really the country may have been acting wholly without honour.

That maybe so to some but that wasn't the history I was taught. I was taught that WWI was not only avoidable it was almost perverse. That millions died over geopolitical points most people, even those making the decisions, didn't even understand. That it was an entirely futile exercise and waste of life on a global scale. WWII is perhaps different but in that case it deems us to remember that if you let extremists take control, war is usually an inevitable consequence. More modern wars are generally more circumspect, but it's a gross generalisation to say that we should ignore wars because in ignoring them we rob them of value. Wars have value. They have the value of showing us how stupid we can be.

I want these things to be remembered. I want people to look at what happened and say 'we won't get fooled again'. Because there's a lot of truth in the maxim 'those who forget the lessons of the past are doomed to repeat them'.

I don't believe that glorifying the valour and duty of soldiers is the same as glorifying war. The two are not at all the same thing. Particularly WWI is synonymous with the phrase 'lions lead by donkeys'. That's a very pithy way to venerate the soldier while denigrating the war they fought. While.. certain politicians may believe there is glory in war, I think most of the rest of us have seen enough to know that's a hollow boast.

I like it.

I stuck with iTunes for so long as I liked the layout. Foobar is just as good if not better in that department as you can change colours etc.
I like the build in FLAC encoder.
The only tiny tiny drawback is it's not just a button click to repeat or randomise, it's a few button clicks.

Song Lyrics:
Tim Minchin - Fat Children
Quote:
Do not feed doughnuts to your obese children
You will regret it when they're in their teens
Maccas might shut them up now that they're seven
But they won't forgive you when
They're getting picked last for PE
Don't you see?

Boombalata [LIFTED]
Have you noticed that yo kids are fat?
What are you going to do about that?
What are you going to do?

So you telling me that your family
Has a history of obesity
You got a wire loose in your pituitary
It's just the way that God made me

It's unlikely, statistically
To be a physical thing
But either way it don't explain why you
Are in the cue at Burger King

You can blame it on biology
You can blame your physiology
You can point to genealogy
And your social anthropology

You can say you are an ectomorph
That you just can't get the kilos orf
Well you can be what you wanna be
But stop feeding that boy KFC

He weighs 30 kilos and he's only three
He looks like a clean-shaven Pavarotti

Switching to Diet Coke is not the way back
Boombalata [LIFTED]
Your kid's a fat, have you noticed that?
Your 5 year old princess in her size 14 tutu
Only eats pizza like that because you do
And you, ought to be ashamed
For you have only got yourself to blame

Will be dead of a heart attack
Before your grandchildren are ten
Perhaps you'll consider
A cut-back on extra fries then

Boombalata kiddie-stuffer
Have you noticed that your kids are fat?
What are you gonna do about that?
What are you gonna do?

So you're telling me that your family
Has a history of obesity
You got the polycystic ovaries
Your mum had childhood diabetes

But, and in your case
There's a [LIFTED] big butt
Do you think it's an appropriate treat
The all-you-can-eat at Pizza Hut?

There's no excuse you silly goose
For a child with a caboose
Like a moose who's eaten too much mousse
It's tantamount to child abuse

Kick them off the [LIFTED] couch
Unplug the Playstation
Send them down to the park
If they don't wanna go, make 'em

Tell them they have to jog
Until their jogging shorts fit 'em
If they hesitate, ask firmly
If they still resist, hit 'em

Is this what you want for your girl and your guy?
These chips off the pork chop, for the toffee apples of your eye?
Kit Kats in value packs are not the way back
Boombalata [LIFTED]
Your kids are fat, did ya notice that?

And you, you should feel ashamed
For you have only got yourself to blame
Your 6 year old miniature Jabba the Hut
Eating half melted Mars Bars from the folds of his gut
He'll be looking for a kidney
Before your grandchildren are ten
Perhaps you'll consider
A cut-back on Taco Bell then
Perhaps you'll consider
A cut-back on Krispy Kreme doughnuts
And Popcorn in bucket-sized boxes
And microwave pizza or drive through McDonalds
For weeknightly dinners in front of the TV
And notes to the phys-ed instructor saying
Timmy has asthma but he really just gets short of breath
Cos he's 35 kilos above the ideal weight
Of 35 kilos for a nine year old boy

I got to see him at the end of last year (I think?!?) in Newcastle, well worth going to see if you get the chance, even in an Arena.
