Been snowing all day here. The state has run out of salt, so none of the roads have been treated.

The hill out of Schwagsdorf was very slippery, even winter tyres were spinning up if you applied gas, as opposed to let the car roll on the torque.

Just been out and salted the drive and the pavement along the side of the property.

Hamburg have announced free pick-up points for salt or grit in the city. Residents can just turn up and collect salt to clear the pavement in front of their properties. They also announced a hotline. If you see a piece of pavement which hasn't been cleared, they will send round a squad to salt it and clear it, and the owner of the property whose stretch of pavement has been cleared will get a bill.

Yes the Americans are at it again. Two people are facing up to five years in jail for throwing snowballs.

I really don't get this. For so many people, clearing the snow on the public pavement during bad snow would be totally impossible. Surely it's up to the people who actually want to walk on them if they choose to do so? Sensible people simply stay in doors or wear good boots. Seriously. Way to ruin the snow for everyone, especially the kids.

Of course, if you live in a city and your stretch of public paving is only 4 metres long and you're fit and healthy and you don't have a day job, then it's not much of a problem and might make good sense.

However, I have visions of a little old lady with a large plot spending 50 hours every day and every night in the freezing darkness with a shovel. It's absolute insanity :?

Derby CC doesn't allow my old employer treat the access road to one of the quarries/regional offices. Yet, if one of the vehicles side-slips on the heavily cambered bend and damages any public property, the company will be held liable.

The road is really, really susceptable to icing up. We were held up for a hour one morning because an artic jack-knifed, in slow motion. So people were getting out of their cars for a chat while we waited - we could barely stand, even on the flat sections.

It is a legal requirement for citizens to clear the pavement before their houses. If you don't at least salt or scrape the pavement, you are responsible if somebody falls over. It is a real problem if you have to work during the day. A couple of times, I've gotten up and the drive was clear, went back down in the cellar to drink my coffee and check the forums, then, as I went to drive to work, I found that it had snowed a couple of cm in the mean time! I didn't have time to clear it away, but had to do it when I got back home.

Nobody is saying that you have to clear hills in the park etc. just that people should be able to walk as normally as possible - they still have to go to work, they still have to go shopping, they still have to check on ageing relatives etc.

As said, it isn't much fun for those that work, but going out before work and making an attempt to scrape is enough. If it snows again in the meantime, there isn't much you can do about it. If you go on holiday or a business trip, you need to arrange for somebody else to clear it for you... :?

When I was in Geltendorf, we had 1.5M of snow in one day. Our driveway had about 1cm of snow at the end of the day, although the sides of the drive and the side of the pavement had over 2M of packed snow! The first 2 times, I did the whole lot myself, the last time, my neighbours had returned home and helped me.

That's why you have family. And salt. And good neighbours.

Snow in Cardiff, complete with sunshine. I don't think it's going to settle though.
