It would appear Seb Blatter may be having a change of heart; grovelling apology to both the FA and the Mexican equivalent over dubious goals, and a promise to re-open the case for technology in football:

No, This is what is called 'kicking it into the long grass'. If it happens again (even in the final) Sepp can now say 'I have already said we will look at this at the next meeting' to try to shut the story down. And the next meeting, they'll do exactly what they did at the last meeting, which is say 'we've looked at it again and still believe it is imperative to the integrity of the game that the referee is seen as the final arbiter in all decisions'.

Of course the fact is video technology has already been used in a world cup final, they just won't publicly admit it. It's generally accepted by everyone except FIFA that at the last world cup final, none of the officials saw Zinedine Zidane headbutt Marco Matterazzi and that the referee took action and gave Zidane a red card only after he was told about it by the fourth official, who had seen a replay of it on the video monitor by the side of the pitch. Of course FIFA still insist the ref acted entirely on his own, even though TV footage clearly shows both he and the linesmen were looking in completely the wrong direction when it happened...

What is the problem with it? It's already had trial runs, 6 cameras in the goalmouth and about 1 or 2 seconds after the ball goes over the line the ref gets a beep in his ear.

No stop in play, no nothing. In fact it will save time because several minutes won't be wasted with one of the teams berating the ref about whether it was or was not a goal.

They talk to the 4th official all the time anyway, he has a frakin video in front of him.

If they hate that then why have they not had the extra officials like in the Europa league?

Anyone else watching the Paraguay vs Japan game?

I drifted off into a snooze and just woke up. It's still 0-0 in extra time. *yawn*

Penalties! Can't see either of these getting any further frankly so you might as well just call it quits, tell them both to go home and give the winner of tonight's game a bye.

Late I know but regardless of the goal that wasn't England didn't deserve to progress.

Regarding the Capello / Pearce vid......... I think that had I been Pearce then Mr Capello would be needing an urgent dental appointment about now.

Portugal vs Spain is looking very much like Portugal vs Brazil. Penalties ahoy!

To be fair it's actually a much better game than the Portugal v Brazil match.

Interesting news. FA backing Capello it seems, further supported by Hodgson going to Liverpool rather than being offered the England post. I won't be too unhappy if Capello stays, especially if he takes the approach he says he wants to take and bring new blood into the side.

Also interesting to see that of all the teams remaining there are hardly any Premier League players. Best league in the world? It can't be, one of the best players in our league is only good enough to sit on the Spanish bench.
