When I hear of the Apple queues the first thing that pops to mind is an image of girls throwing underwear at the favourite pop idol.
You won't see me doing it and I do think it is foolish, but as Alex said it is nice that people are getting excited about something.

If one is diving so close to the limits that +/- 1% will make a difference then the error has already been made.

I agree it may be foolish, but let's not forget the queues for the latest and greatest FPS games, or the games consoles. It's not just Apple shiny that has dedicated queuers.

No it's not just Apple, although they do seem to get much more coverage.

Yes but how do you think some of the Apple staff get dates? They collect all the thrown underwear and call the donors.

Oh, I don't know. What was that last big game release last year, COD something or other? That was on the BBC and everything.

Probably Modern Warfare 2. Rather than queue up outside Game to buy it at midnight I had a good nights sleep, went to Toys R Us the next morning and bought it for a fiver cheaper. Shame I missed out on all that "atmosphere" though. I agree that it's just as sad whether it's an iPad, 3DS or COD game they're queueing for but in all honestly I've never seen anything like that video of the Apple store with all the running and high fives.

Yeah, that's a bit too American for my taste. It builds up the anticipation and atmosphere, I suppose.

Thankfully nobody was actually throwing underwear. Nintendo's new handheld game widget came out the same day (well, midnight the night before rather than 5PM) and there were significant queues for that too. I think it's a sweet spot of desirability, affordability and resources, to a degree. I'm sure there would be, for example, queues for the new Ferrari but the people who buy that are so cash rich but time poor they order rather than queuing. Same for a the best scotch or brandy maybe. The thing with gadgets is you have groups of people with the right disposable income, the right amount of interest and, let's put it bluntly, usually not a lot of high priority calls on their time. To queue for a day for something (when you're not shatteringly poor or in a disaster zone) you have to a) Be able to afford it b) Want it enough to have that much patience c) be able to spend the time doing that, rather than something else less boring. You're talking about a fairly small intersection in that venn diagram, really. Jon
