Now you mention it, I've never seen an Allied Carpets warehouse in Mogadishu that wasn't on fire.

Don't forget, these poverty ridden people are forced into organising this on £300 smart phones. Spare a thought.

It's not just paupers. They were just saying on the news that some of those charged today included an undergraduate, youth worker and a graphic designer.

Yes and they had to steal these phones to get involved in the riots. That or have contracts. Kids make loads of calls and texts so can justify a subsidised contract on a new phone.

Comparisons between us and places like Syria make me smile.
Here, if you can be bothered, you can go and vote to change things.
However, lots of people don't bother, so they can STFU and quit their bitching, no?
Or, are those who are doing the looting and arson all voters frustrated with a lack of political largesse?

Story on the tech sites just now - RIM had agreed to provide any requested information to the UK police to help gather evidence against rioters using BBM to organise. The RIM website has since been defaced with a notice saying that unless they reverse their decision, all the data on RIMs servers will be posted on the internet.

Jesus wept.

The only thing they're bothered on voting about is Samsung vs Panasonic.

By the way, we probably need to get the thread title changed now, it's definitely not just London any more.

You'd assume/hope the shops keep a proper stock record. In which case all these phones are going to probably get blocked within a few days anyway. If they're not already being used as GPS pointers to the people who happen to have them...

More likely they'll be sold in pub carparks for a fraction of the cost, leaving the buyer up the creek when it gets blocked; or when they get a visit from the boys in blue.

Not that I care. If you buy a brand new, still sealed, smart phone for a knockdown price off some chap down the pub then it's your own fault if things go awry.

Seems the yoof are just hankering after making a comeback call for The Smiths:

Quote:
Panic on the streets of London
Panic on the streets of Birmingham
I wonder to myself
Could life ever be sane again ?
The Leeds side-streets that you slip down
I wonder to myself
Hopes may rise on the Grasmere
But Honey Pie, you're not safe here
So you run down
To the safety of the town
But there's Panic on the streets of Carlisle
Dublin, Dundee, Humberside
I wonder to myself

They're just sentimental buggers, bless.

Thousands of rioters.

33 people in court (so far).

Message: You're pretty much going to get away with it. Have fun!

If you're burning and looting (even on the pretense of a political message) you should ALL be hoisted sharpish to a police cell. THEN we'll talk to those in the community that are capable of simple reasoning to see what problems led to this (any takers for a bet on "Drugs and gangs"?)

And many thanks to the news organisations for doing their utmost to minimise the impact of the rioting btw.

I have no idea why they haven't sorted it out, I mean we're not talking huge numbers of rioters. There's only something like a couple of hundred in Manchester.

I thought there were around 600 arrests in London alone; and around a quarter of those had been charged?

Of course, it will take time to process them through the courts, but I'd hardly say that was sending the message that they're getting off scot free.

Still getting information in dribs and drabs, and ignoring the facespace rumours until I can get verification.

Just heard a news report on the radio, the Printworks/Victoria station area seems to be a flashpoint - maybe they're going to trash Selfridges? - with police on horseback on Cross Street. Also mayhem in Salford apparently. Routes out of town through Salford (A6/M602) are slow going due to smoke( ? that bit wasn't entirely clear). Hope yours are already out John.

Yeah, she got out OK, thank [LIFTED]! A colleague of hers was parked across the road, and gave her a life to her dads, where she'll be staying tonight.

Yeah, I'm kinda puzzled that a relatively peaceful demonstration sees a couple of thousand people kettled for hours on end, yet a few hundred rioters (in any given location) cannot be contained and subdued.

[edit] A guy I used to drink with was (is) a copper, and had his fair share of riot duty. It was a plain old, block the exits, charge up in formation and crowd them. If some one kicked off and lobbed a brick at you then (in his words) "out with the batons and bosh, bosh, bosh". The vast majority in a crowd don't have the stomach for close quarters confrontation with the riot squads, apparently; but stand off them and they'll lob bricks until the cows come home.
