Ah, you updated your post before my reply.

I can't see the average user wanting to do anything other than play games/make calls/send texts etc... which is what the iPhone (or Android devices, or Win Mobile devices are made for).

If you want to do anything else then you will be one of maybe less than 1% of users who want to do that and you get the device that allows you to do it most easily.

At work we needed a server that was capable of serving 100s of users simultaneously with multiple DBs etc... We didn't go for Windows or Mac because ignoring the amount of customisation you can do you can't get the same reliability/performance we required which is why we have a Sun server.

Oli,

The difference is this:

Google allow users to change the ROM, as do HTC etc.

If you stick a third party ROM image on it, will they still mend it if you break it?

I jailbroke my 3GS a while back. In return, I got a few apps like lockinfo, custom themes and an app I can't remember the name of (it allowed me turn in/off various features like bluetooth and wifi without having to f*ck about with menus, which really p*sses me off about the standard way to do things).

I didn't bother with illegal apps or cracked apps. In fact, I think I'll re-jailbreak the 4S this weekend.

You mean SBSettings? It integrates nicely with the notification centre. It is something that I would like to see in stock iOS along with something to kill all apps at once.

My iPhone 4 is jailbroken. Not for pirate apps but for tweaks that make the phone a bit nicer to use.

Hopefully the 4s jailbreak will be out for you at the weekend.

5 seconds searching on the iOS App Store for 'settings' gave me an app for 69p called Quick Settings! that appears to do what you describe.

The only slight annoyance with iSO, is that I heard Apple won't let an iPhone sync with a none iOS phone for file transfers. Is that true? That would be bloody annying if it was.

Not sure, but then I don't think anyone has ever wanted me to transfer anything from my phone. Then again I have very little that I would say is on my phone, it's all copied to it from the cloud or my computer...

DropBox. I use that to move files between my Macs and iOS devices. Graphics, photos, drawings, PDFs, etc. etc. There is an iOS DropBox app, as well as a third party one called GoodReader, which can also access WebDav servers.

Or just use the free IconSettings here - http://iphoneza.co.za/IconSettings/

Your app is killed as soon as you press the home button or switch to another app, unless it has requested prolonged background running, see: viewtopic.php?f=34&t=15471

That app takes you to the appropriate place in the Settings to toggle whichever setting you want to. SBSettings is a true one touch solution. It's very, very useful.

You mean an app that was released just over a fortnight ago? Yes, would have been useful when I jailbroke my iphone 3gs early last year (!).

Secondly, have you seen the language?

Thirdly, as james016 correctly stated:

james016 wrote:

All I had to do was touch the top info bar and it would "drop down". I could then turn off wifi and turn on 3G with one press for each setting. I think it took four presses in total to make the screen appear, activate 3G, deactivate wifi and close the screen. It takes at least 7-9 presses to do it the "Apple" way!

Though, on my iPhone 4, I get very acceptable battery life out of having Wi-Fi and 3G on all the time. I must admit I don't own any Bluetooth kit so it's always off. I get two days at a push with light use, or about a day and a half under normal usage. I'm so used to charging over night it's not a problem.

Ah fair enough, like I said, I didn't spend too long on it.

I guess he's got English as a second language?

Home key > Settings > Wifi > Off.
4 button presses from anywhere.

And then to activate 3G?

That is my biggest bugbear with the iPhone - that they did not put wifi and 3G in the same menu.

Mine's on all the time, by default, as I'm on 3.
Home button > Settings > General > Network > Cellular Data (I guess?)

Why would you turn it off?
Do you not use the internet on your phone that much? :?
