Bid To Stop X Factor Festive Hit 'Stupid'

http://news.sky.com/skynews/Home/Showbi ... 7735?f=rss

Quote:
Simon Cowell has attacked an online campaign to stop this year's X Factor winner from becoming the Christmas number one as "stupid" and "cynical".

A Facebook group of more than 556,000 has pledged to buy a 1992 track by Rage Against The Machine instead.

The web protest was set up to fight The X Factor's perceived stranglehold over the UK charts during the festive season.

The campaign asks: "Fed up of Simon Cowell's latest karaoke act being Christmas number one?

"Me too... So who's up for a mass-purchase of the track Killing In The Name... as a protest to the X Factor b******s?"

Speaking at a press conference before the talent show's weekend final, Cowell said the campaign was "dismissive" of the programme's fans.

"To treat our audiences as if they're stupid - I don't like that," he said.

"I think the campaign's aimed directly at me, it's stupid. Me having a number one record at Christmas is not going to change my life particularly.

"It does however change [the finalists'] lives and we put this opportunity there so that the winner of the X Factor gets the chance of having a big hit record.

"I think it's quite a cynical campaign geared at me which is actually going to spoil the party for [the finalists]."

Jon Morter, who set up the Facebook and Twitter campaign with his wife Tracy, earlier told Sky News Online he thought the lyrics of Killing In The Name were "very apt".

The Christmas number one is a "great tradition" that X Factor has "taken all the fun out of," he added.

To treat our audiences as if they're stupid - I don't like that' - No wonder, that sort of thing has made you a fortune

'I think the campaign's aimed directly at me, it's stupid. Me having a number one record at Christmas is not going to change my life particularly' - Depends if it's successful and on the potential for a debate/national realisation of your con artistry me old son :)

'It does however change [the finalists'] lives and we put this opportunity there so that the winner of the X Factor gets the chance of having a big hit record.' - Yeah, it's quite a 'cynical campaign' you've been running all these years

I think it's quite a cynical campaign geared at me which is actually going to spoil the party for [the finalists].' - I do hope that's something of a signal of apprehension there :D

If he can't get the pay deal he wants then another network will snap it up.

I'm not so sure.
The Beeb can't have it as they won't make extra money out of advertising
Sky won't be given it as less viewers mean less money for Cowell through phone ins.

I say, call his bluff ITV.

Channel 4? Channel 5? OK, maybe Channel 5 might not work, but Channel 4 are going to need something to replace Big Brother, aren't they?

Pete Waterman: Why I refuse to watch X Factor (because there's only one winner - my old friend Simon Cowell)

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/ar ... owell.html

Pete has a book out and therefore needs all the controversy he can get, but he still seems to make a lot of valid points there - like him, I don't watch the show ;)

Simon Cowell’s first TV appearance (allegedly)

I did laugh at the host saying 'Simon, you're on thirty five pounds...' with what we know he's worth now

The one flaw in your plan is Cowell already has more money than he could possibly spend in his life, so not getting the No. 1 will represent a minor inconvenience to him.

There was a feature on the radio earlier about this campaign and he said, "it makes no difference to me, just think of the poor karaoke star whose life you're ruining".

Which is correct, but he should have just said, "no comment". That would have shown he didn't really care. The poor karaoke star that we should care about is someone who had f all anyway.

That is what I like the most about this campaign: If you keep winding people up they will stand up for themselves at some point. And also this is a great and entirely legal way flick a "V" at the "MAN"...
