Small snow lantern built this evening. It’s a pile of snow built around a bottle. Take the bottle out and drop a night light in.

We didn't get the snow storm last night and temperatures stayed around the -2°C over night. We got about 2cm, so no real worries. Due to the warmer weather, the main road is mainly visible again, the packed snow has melted from the gritting. The side roads are still packed snow, it usually takes the best part of a week for them to get to side roads (housing estates etc.), not that that is a real problem.

If one is diving so close to the limits that +/- 1% will make a difference then the error has already been made.

I've just had to help a neighbour's mum get her car out of ice rink that is my street. Turns out she had no idea that you get more grip when you use a higher gear.

You don't get more grip, just a more gentle application of engine power. But if someone doesn't know this then just say you get more grip.

I prefer to manage this by, you know, not stamping on the accelerator. Unlike the bloke in a customised A3 did outside my house this afternoon and ended up going sideways down the street. Luckily for him, there were no other cars parked in the way or it would have got messy. I thought all Audis were 4WD anyway? Jon

Absolutely, I find the best way is to not use the accelerator at all when pulling away, just let the clutch up slowly without pressing the accelerator. All our snow seems to be coming down as rain.

Watch out for the ice then, because it's been ridiculously cold and icy the last few days.
