The Transformers films (T1 and T2 from here on in) are perfect examples of when spectacle aids the story and when it's there above all else IMO.

+ The rest of it

TBH I completely agree with you there...

I thought the first Transformers film was rather good and whilst i loved the action scenes of the second, it went on for too long (without any plot development or anything) and contained probably 30 minutes to an hour's extra content which could have just been left in the Director's cut and not included in the cinematic version and imo making the overall film a lot more enjoyable to watch.

Go and see Sherlock Holmes instead. A minimum of fuss about the tech used to make it, some very good performances and an interesting story.

Not what I expected from you Al! Haven't seen it yet, but want to. Although as far as plot goes, I imagine it will be a feature-length intro to the sequel ;)

Nice Stu, thanks

Oh there's still lots of 'big' stuff going on, but Ritchie isn't Michael Bay, remember. There's lot of CGI, but it's been cleverly done. Most of it's been used for location and sets rather than KERBLOOOM.
(Although there is a bit of stuff blowing up, but it's actually not that big, just well shot.)

To be fair it isn't just the CGI, I've been to see all the major releases this year and yes CGI does play a big part, but what does set this film apart is the 3D element (well, for me at least). It opens up a whole new facet, and for me it was well worth the entrance fee. :)

Well, as I haven't seen Sherlock yet it would be Avatar Nick. Obviously these are only personal opinions based on actually seeing the film. What bemuses me is peeps saying "it's crap" without actually seeing it, or worse seeing a pirated version on DVD. I mean, how lame is that? (Soz Adam).

A quote from an Ain't It Cool News page that somewhat ties in with the 3D aspect of Avatar and other films:

Quote:
Michael Bay was recently asked about whether any of his films would be presented in 3-D - a singularly unnerving prospect for moviegoers.

"I prefer the flat screen. I'm not jumping to do 3-D at all-it's a pain in the neck to shoot it and I actually like the flat image. I've heard that some people can't even see 3-D and, moreover, that a major side effect of watching it is feeling exhausted. Can you imagine how you'd feel watching one of my movies in 3-D?"

It's good to see Bay's did his research ;)

My girlfriend and her youngest daughter (14) went to see it last night.

Daughter liked it. The people around them were moaning that the film was too long and boring (but didn't get up and leave).

My girlfriend thought it was okay, a lot of similarities to Dances with Wolves, as Mark mentioned, She said the story was okay, but didn't "knock her off her stool". It was worth watching, once, but not something she would want to see again.

She said it also reminded her of another film we have seen, but I can't for the life of me remember which, where the characters have to befriend large birds and fly them. Doesn't ring a bell at the moment, apart from some time travel/forgotten world thing in television, where some teenagers end up in a dinosaur town and one learns to fly a bid... Anyone got an idea what film she is talking about?

Dinotopia? http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0233044/

Saw Avatar in 3D last night. Really enjoyed it. It was visually stunning.

Isn't every film ever, just some variation on another film/book/poem/whatever?

9' tall Smurf? I think the German press was smoking something when that moniker was dreamt up.
