Because it's soooooo difficult to actually type The Dark Knight, isn't it? Well, actually, no, it isn't. Lazy sod.

Welcome to the internet, where everybody is lazy. We could all talk in person, but that would involve more than moving our fingers.

Unless it's on Twitter, and unless I'm taking the rip, I try to type the words I'd say. I'd never say 'TDK' in substitution for The Dark Knight during a face to face conversation, so I'm not going to do it here either. Mark

If I ever find myself saying "lol" in real life, I will find someone to shoot me.

Only when quoting someone or taking the rip. I don't even use 'LOL' on Twitter (which you should know) or text messages. Mark

I say it quite often in real life. When the kids think they're being funny, but all that they're actually doing is winding me up... I also sometimes say rofl, and occasionally mega lolz, just to indicate in a sarcastic way that they are not being funny, just annoying.

Lol isn't a TLA, it's just flat out homo. I don't use it online, or in person.
But I would say TDK in real life. Just like I'd say ANH, ESB and ROTJ. TLAs can make brevity fun, in a sarcastic kinda way. Just like the way Barney always says "BTW" in How I Met Your Mother.
Lol does not achieve this.

So, the abbreviation is five syllables opposed to three for the phrase in full. How bizarre.

Heather, I was thinking the same with the ROTJ/Jedi above.

What would be easier is via phones. Everyone I know can be called via a dialling short cut so even less energy needed.
