Does anyone object if I amend the title of this thread to better suit its actual content now?

Not at all. Now Del Toro has left it would make sense.

If one is diving so close to the limits that +/- 1% will make a difference then the error has already been made.

Peter Jackson's got a new production video blog online - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t47TXEi0No0

If you missed the last one, then you'll be heartened to hear Peter's been slumming it, flying around NZ with 5 helicopters, scouting locations.

My prediction based on the trailers: the Hobbit looks pants.

No surprise there. It's not ecaxtly a huge book. I'm surprised they stretched it to two films.

I understand it stretched because Jackson and the scriptwriters have included some of the Silmarillion. That's the book that was later published by Tolkien which is the creation myth of Middle Earth, and helps to explain some of the mythology in The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings.

I hope they made more sense out of that book than I did.
What a disjointed mess that book is.

I quite agree, though to be fair I think Tolkien worked on it on and off until he died. It was always a work in progress, and it wasn't published in a sensible form until his son took it on and edited everything into what it is now.

It's easy to forget that Middle Earth didn't just spring into existence when Tolkien began writing The Hobbit and TLotR. He'd been working on the creation story, the languages, the geography, for some time. There are few fantasy novel series that come close to the scope he encompassed - I can only really think of Raymond E Feist's epic Midkemian sagas.

He has an important part to the story, but please keep it to a minimum.

Isn't he only in one scene, that occurs in almost total darkness?
