I seriously doubt that, it's far more likely to be the elderly who can't absorb vitamin D as readily. The young can obtain and store a year's supply of Vitamin D in less than 30 minutes.

I so agree. There are so many things in this world that do us harm, as are there so many things that don't.

I wonder how many here who shirk from the sun into the shade smoke? Or drink alcohol beyond the "safe" recommended unit guidelines a week? Listen to their earphones louder than they need to? Ride bicycles without helmets? Microwave food? Use hand dryers? Bite their nails? Partake in contact sports? Take more than they should of their over-the-counter medication? Live in cities without facemasks? Drive without seatbelts? Eat their 5 portions a day? Exercise daily? Sleep 8 hours a night? Brush & floss their teeth thrice daily?

Life is too short to worry. About anything.

And it will be even shorter if you smoke, drink too much, don't wear seatbelts etc etc...

There was a report recently about the increase in rickets because of kids not going outside. Over protective parents or consoles the effect is the same.

Add ever growing numbers of sickly allergy-ridden people to that.

I'd rather have hay-fever than cholera. And there's a lot of evidence that it's your precious dirty cities (exhaust fumes etc) that cause respiratory conditions such as asthma, not staying indoors.

That's interesting Matt. Note, the article suggests 15 minutes of sun a few times a week and warns against prolonged exposure. I probably get more than that just by going out to work, and then there's my smoke breaks which are also out side in the weather.

I wonder how sunny it needs to be for your body to actually produce vitamin D?

But many scientists believe that "safe sun" (15 minutes or so outdoors a few times a week without sunscreen) is beneficial to your overall health.

I do that regularly. I work in the garden in just trunks doing the weeding and dead heading the roses and that gives me a fair doss of UV. Then I walk to and from the shops on little shopping trips several times a week adding to the effect, and never use sunblock. I might need to do a little more particularly in the winter.

I like the way that it suggests that you can't get too much vitamin D through the sun, and that vitamin D is very beneficial when obtained this way as compared to dietary routes. Therefore 15mins a few times a week should be considered a minimum. As for a maximum, well as long as you aren't near or at burning point then all should be good, evolution probably knows better than we do.

I live in one of the most consistently overcast parts of Europe and therefore I have had to find other ways to ingest Vitamin D.

Just because one can make Vitamin D from sun exposure doesn't mean one is automatically unhealthy by not doing.

Just because it's overcast doesn't mean the suns rays are not getting through 8-)
