Quote:
Angelina Jolie’s out. So is Natalie Portman. But Warner Bros are hopeful that the third time will be the charm, as they offer the lead role in Alfonso Cuaron’s Gravity to Sandra Bullock.

Following a female worker's plight to get back to Earth and her daughter when her space station is destroyed, the ambitious $80m 3D sci-fi has been attempting to get off the ground all year.

With Robert Downey Jr. already attached to co-star, Jolie departed earlier, while Portman has reportedly been forced to turn the role down thanks to scheduling conflicts.

Now, according to Deadline, Warner Bros are “making a full court press for Sandra Bullock to play the role”.

Surely the biggest draw here is the chance to work with Cuaron and Downey Jr. If Bullock decided to take the role, it would be her first sci-fi since 1993’s Demolition Man.

Post-Oscar, the actress is probably being pressured to choose her roles carefully (though considering All About Steve, maybe not). Something tells us Gravity wouldn’t be her Catwoman.

Quote:
Emily Blunt is set to star alongside Bruce Willis and Joseph Gordon-Levitt in sci-fi thriller Looper.

The film is director Rian Johnson’s follow-up to the criminally overlooked Brothers Bloom, and the criminally brilliant Brick.

The plot, set sometime in the near future, concerns a mysterious crime syndicate who send their victims back in time to be killed by the gun-wielding ‘loopers’.

Gordon-Levitt plays Joe, one such looper, who ends up on the run when his future self (Willis) is sent back in time to be killed.

Blunt will play Sara (a deliberate Terminator reference?), a mother who agrees to hide Joe from the syndicate on her farm.

It all sounds gleefully nutty and will probably leave many scratching their heads. It also marks the Johnson's second collaboration with Gordon-Levitt after 2005’s Brick.

Johnson describes the film as being ‘very sci-fi, but it’s very character-based and very concentrated…’ He also claims it will be ‘really violent and dark’. Exciting stuff indeed.

Looper is scheduled to start shooting in New Orleans this January.

I see that the article mentions that legal costs have caused things to spiral out of control but the actual story of The Hobbit is much less complicated than Lord Of The Rings so unless it is going to have a lot of extra SFX sequences thrown in I don't see why it should cost $500 million. That's a ridiculous amount of money. I wonder if that figure includes all the advertising and promotion that would be needed as it used to be reckoned that you needed at least half as much again of the film's budget for that purpose.

Personally I don't think its worth making the Hobbit at such expense as its all been done so well in the LOTR trilogy.

Isn't it because the film's split into two parts? Though presumably a (effectively) combined production should be a fair bit cheaper than £500m? :?

Really depends on how it's been scheduled, how much work has to go into props, SFX, costume, make up, location fees etc.
If Peter Jackson came knocking on your door saying 'I need to use your land to get this shot', and bearing in mind what LOTR took, you're not likely to say 'Sure, you just carry on - buy us a pint and we'll call it quits.'
I suspect a lot of key people have upped their rates, is what I'm saying.

Its called Hollywood accountancy. Movies can take hundred of million of dollars if not billions in revenue above the "budget" but by clever and highly dubious accountancy methods they somehow never make a profit or it gets reduced massivly.

Hollywood accountancy usually happens after event, not before, however.
The cost of these two films - is it that unusual for a big event movie to cost $200 million?
Depending on what they're putting in these two films, $500 million is perhaps not out of the way. It's exceptional, yes, but then perhaps so is this project.

That is the budget and it might be designed to get attention, extra hype for the pre-sales to the TV companies. It helps with that aspect, plus they might have to keep within the budget with the credit conditions.

Peter Morgan talks Freddie Mercury biopic

Sacha Baron Cohen will soon be shrugging into the glittery stagewear of Freddie Mercury for a big screen biopic of the Queen singer, and writer Peter Morgan has been talking about what we should expect from the film.

Firstly, he reveals that it will not revolve entirely around Mercury’s contraction of AIDS, placing the focus instead on the frontman’s relationship with his other band members.

“I didn't want to write an AIDS movie, to be honest with you,” he tells Cinema Blend. “And then, I just looked at the period. It's sort of where he rejects [the other members of Queen] and comes back to them.

“It's sort of like a family movie. It's sort of like I hate my family, I want to be independent, and then I come back.”

The writer goes on to reveal that the film’s producers – Queen band members Brian May, Roger Taylor and John Deacon – are giving him advice, though he’s unsure “how much they’ll like what I write”.

Sounds emotional. One thing we’re quite sure of – the film will include a re-staging of the 1985 Live Aid performance at Wembley Stadium.

Nice :D

Danny Boyle up for 28 Months Later?

Danny Boyle is rumoured to be interested in taking on a second sequel to his apocalyptic 28 Days Later.

Currently being pedalled about under the unofficial title 28 Months Later, Dread Central got word from the director himself on the threequel. Asked if he’d produce, Boyle responded: “Actually, I want to direct it.”

The project has been quietly moving around behind the scenes since 2007, with Russia a favoured setting. Though he didn't return for first sequel 28 Weeks Later, Boyle has mentioned in the past that he’d be interested in directing a third flick. Back in 2007, he had this to say:

“It’s to do with Russia actually. It’s to do with that part of the world. Not France. The second film hints that it gets to France eventually, and wipes out the French. But this third idea is actually more to do with Russia, but that’s actually all I can say.”

Three years on, could he be seriously considering it? Boyle’s next project will actually be a theatre production of Frankenstein, while he has a three year contract with Fox Searchlight, of which the upcoming 127 Hours is a part. But after that, he’s more than free enough for another 28 movie.

http://www.totalfilm.com/news/danny-boy ... nths-later

I wish they'd done more with Weeks, so I'm looking forward to this :)
