Mine and a mates Xbox 360s that we modded yesterday. His ring of light thing on the front goes blue, and mine goes red. Looks freakin' mental :D

Even though I explained to the oh so nice 2nd line engineer from TalkTalk that I am an IT professional and have been for over twenty years, he still tried to treat me like an idiot!

Whilst trying to explain why my Broadband connection is rubbish he blamed my LAN setup, (and also interference from my microwave/telephone/elecric can opener/black holes/etc) and said he would remotely make some changes to improve it... I don't think he appreciated the fact that I was logged onto the router at the time and saw him reduce the speed from four to three Megs.

When I asked him repeatedly if he had reduced the speed, (eventually saying "Look, just yes or no. Did you just reduce my connection speed from 4 to 3 meg") he ummed and arred for a few minutes then admitted that he had.

I want to move to a new ISP...

Were you complaining about it dropping off and timing out?

Frequent dropouts are often caused by poor cabling and interference. The only thing that the engineer could really do would be to increase the SNR, which would reduce your speed but improve the reliability.

If the problem is very bad, then once all other avenues are exhausted you can request an SFI engineer to visit your premises and investigate further. They usually sort the problem out, and very often it's down to bad wiring in the house or interference from electrical equipment. If that's what they find, then you'll have to pay the call out charge. Quite obviously it's not TT's responsibility to fix your house, and an SFI engineer doesn't come cheap.

Telephone cable was meant for speech running at a few KHz. It's a fricken miracle we can get multiple megabits down it, but it's more of an art than a science. The environment plays a massive role in determining your best speed and reliability.

However; if you're complaining about poor speeds after 5pm then that's just network contention. I suspect you're probably only paying for the 50:1 option?

*Sigh*

I now know that feeling they talk about in movies. When you left behind the girl...

That feeling never gets any better or easier with experience.

Brilliant. I guess it doesn't help that we're in contact, and live thousands of miles away... :|

A guy on eBay is trying to rip me off with fake DVDs and now he's about to be investigated by FACT and maybe the other copyright types - all over £20

I'm also going to see what Trading Standards has to say about some of Paypal's practices
