it is relevant. If previous generations of phones had this problem then it gives Apple engineers time to address the problem not ignore it and say "well everyone else has the fault, so its ok for us to have it. yup the laws of physics are the same so they have all this extra time to try and address the problem. because they have done nothing to address the design fault. well no one else has the magical revolutionary ect etc it just works image agree absolutely. True, but its the possible damage to the reputation of the brand, which may be bad in the short term but wont be a problem longterm.. unless Jobs has truly gone bat [LIFTED] crazy Why? survey after survey shows how high people trust Apple as a brand and the perceived quality of their products. I've had every generation of the iphone so far and IMHO I thinks its bloody brilliant and it defines and leads the consumer smartphone market. Its not perfect but what is. either someone balls up big style in testing (possible but they will never admit that), they decided that it didn't matter (well the bad publicity shows that it does matter and the cost of those free bumpers) or it could be a variable quality issue in manufacturing which could explain why it affects some peoples phones and not others.

In principle yes but in reality that's just not the way the world works. Engineers and designers have limited time and resources and, frankly, a problem is not a problem until somebody complains about it. Nobody had complained about it when it was there in the previous iPhones or in any of the other phones from other manufacturers who also have/had it therefore there was no reason to spend time and effort eliminating it from this iPhone. Until somebody made a video of it happening on Youtube and a week later the entire sky is indeed falling in. This isn't like (and I don't want to make this an MS vs Apple thing because it isn't, but it is the most obvious counter example) the RROD where apparently it was happening to between 30% and 40% of units, it was killing them stone dead and the company involved denied the problem existed for a year. Given my continuing caveat about Apple's statistics it happens to about 1% of customers and they're offering a solution for free inside a couple of weeks. Yet which has had the most publicity? It's probably neck and neck more or less, but the iPhone 4 kerfufflee has been concentrated into weeks rather than years. You know he actually is bat [LIFTED] crazy right? Just.. usually in an OK kind of way. The logical conclusion is they decided it didn't matter because all the evidence told them it didn't matter. Millions of phones in people's hands which, apparently, did exactly the same thing and hardly anyone complained about it. That to probably anybody who wasn't terrifically OCD would suggest it's an issue that doesn't need fixing. The publicity snowball has made it matter much more than the issue itself has ever mattered. It's like... it's like the crazes we used to get when were kids. Hula hoops, those things with springs you put on your head. They were all, without exception, [LIFTED]. Yet everyone had them? Why? Because everyone had them! The story becomes self perpetuating not because it's widespread but because it's already news. It's a bizarre thing and I don't think it's really happened in tech before but I'm sure if we were to look back in the news archives we'd see stories where the public reaction was out of all proportion to the actual story.

Oh and btw my iPhone4 works, works in UK on O2, I'm currently in rural Maine, USA on AT&T(apparently the worst telecoms company in the world) and it still works. Yes the bars go up and down, but then they do that in the cheapo Motorola pay as you go handsets I also have here. But guess what, they all work, all over the state(which btw is Verizon country!!)
I feel sorry for AT&T, they get such a bad press yet the offer far more than Verizon and other providers here. Verizon love to crow about no dropped calls and great 3G coverage but don't mention that this is at the expense of thing like receiving data and voice calls simultaneously, e.g. if you are on a call you wont get a text message, or if you are surfing the web you won't get a call. It's either calls, texts, or web surfing with them at any one time.

Mid July was suggested after the launch. So around about now they would have been appearing. Though they are launching in a few more countries at the end of the month so who knows if it will be delayed again?

I have to agree this is over blown. The issue does not affect everyone. It has not stopped me not wanting to get one. The offer of a bumper is a great compromise. I will get one regardless. It will protect the phone as well. If it is a software issue this will get fixed soon enough. There is already an OS upgrade in beta as we speak.

It all seems reasonable to me. If the phone was significantly worse than the 3GS it would make sense that they would get more returns than they got for the 3GS. It seems that this has been somewhat blown out to proportion.

Heed the Egg. You'd get something like £250 for it.

Not bad for a one year old phone.
