NSA paid millions to cover Prism compliance costs for tech companies

Quote:
The disclosure that taxpayers' money was used to cover the companies' compliance costs raises new questions over the relationship between Silicon Valley and the NSA. Since the existence of the program was first revealed by the Guardian and the Washington Post on June 6, the companies have repeatedly denied all knowledge of it and insisted they only hand over user data in response to specific legal requests from the authorities.

Yeah, that's going well over 'the creepy line', Google.*

*Other NSA bitches are available.

It was estimated that the NSA revelations could cost the US cloud industry $120 Billion a year annually within a few years. Who wants their data automatically copied to the NSA which is what happens with a US cloud provider.

NSA analysts 'wilfully violated' surveillance systems, agency admits

http://www.theguardian.com/world/2013/a ... ce-systems

Yeah nobody was ever gonna abuse the most powerful database in the world, were they?

FFS you can't even trust a fuddy duddy local council not to abuse the data it's given, never mind an organisation where being a sociopath is actually good for your career

The Bloomberg news agency reported that anonymous US officials had said there had been "a few cases" where NSA officials or contractors had used agency surveillance tools or data to spy on people in which they had romantic interests.

That happens in every organisation which has a big database. Look at the abuses by the police with the Police National Computer, in the US the numbers of passport office who decided to access President Obama's passport records. It happens a lot more than it should.

According to one of the documents, NSA experts succeeded in getting into the UN video conferencing system and cracking its coding in 2012.

The document said: "The data traffic gives us internal video teleconferences of the United Nations (yay!)."
