Yeah, but he'd been a plonker before the law caught up with him by many accounts - he's actually making an iPhone game if you wanna Google it I think the big problem is that bar Indy, those films were niche even to some geeks - Kick-Ass and Scott Pilgrim aren't exactly Batman and Spider-Man, and nobody was ever gonna say to their friends, 'You must see Snakes on a Plane!'

Yes they were all niche films. I think that the problem is that films like Snakes on a Plane are too niche for the sums of money they spend promoting it. Let word of mouth do the promotion. Excessive marketing can put people off.

Kick-Ass and Scott Pilgrim both beat the trousers off the last Batman and Spider-Man films, in my opinion. I thought the last films from the Bat and the Spider franchises were really quite tripe compared to those other two films mentioned above. Mark

I consider your social circle eccentric I was talking in terms of profile Kick-Ass I just found boring due to a lack of real pacing. What works brilliantly on a comic book page doesn't always directly transfer to film, and vice versa I guess. And I read the book afterwards Haven't watched Pilgrim but I intend to. The last Spider-Man film was limp even by that franchise's standards IMO, TDK is the best superhero film I've seen since the original Superman, not that it didn't have the odd flaw (Bale's ridiculous Bat-voice, the Joker's schemes requiring more prep than Jigsaw's entire 'career' ).

The issue is that the industry treat geeks as sheep to be fleeced. They may like a certain genre but that does not mean that it can be made in to film that works.

True. However, it does mean that it can be made in to a film that may work. Mark

May is not a word that a studio with millions at stake wants to hear. I think that if they come up with better story lines they have a much better chance of getting their money back. It is probably the most cost effective investment that a studio can make. An extra million to the scriptwriter could make it so much better.

+1, or at least some sort of incentive. They're effectively in the speculation business with almost no guarantees (Blade Runner? Shawshank? Both 'flops' at the cinema), but since they're so insistent on making script choices/changes themselves and spending a fortune on 'names', you'd think they'd give themselves a better shot with the most fundamental piece of the project...

Even so that is why they should still spend that extra money on the script rather than the marketing afterwards.

If I remember rightly Shawshank had very little promotion, but was a sleeper. It did well afterwards. The independants have the right idea. Make cheaper films without big names and you can be profitable much more quickly. After the low initial costs are recovered any income flows straight through to profits. Hollywood account accepting. The same applies for Blade Runner. It was very successful in the DVD market and the reruns market. All of which probably boosted its TV value. Though studios will want the odd blockbuster to get the audiences excited.

Arnold Schwarzeneggar reading 3 scripts right now, including WITH WINGS AS EAGLES!!!Hey folks, Harry here... yeah, this is kinda awesome if it comes to pass... Apparently Arnold has reported that he's currently reading 3 scripts including one of my old favorites from Arnie's unmade past. For me, there are two films that I would kill to see Arnold make. 1) is CRUSADE with Paul Verhoeven. Then the one that he says he's reading and particularly fond of... is WITH WINGS AS EAGLES! This could be a great film for Arnold. Wallace's script is awesome. I'm a little concerned that Arnold may feel that CRUSADE is now out of his age range, if that is the case, I'd love to see him produce that film, so it gets made (Arnie owns the Script). But WITH WINGS AS EAGLES gets to show off Arnold's ability with multiple languages, and really feels like a classic WWII flick. This is very good news... http://www.aintitcool.com/node/48101Arnie the Austrian in a war film, eh? What could go wrong? Seriously though, it'll be great to have him back in an even half-decent film
