I went for the Griffin carbon fibre look one in the end. Unfortunately now I've completed the order the app won't let me look at the choices any more. Bah. 3-5 week wait on all of them anyway. Jon

I've got one of those already. Rather nice but won't fit in the tomtom car holder with it on.

Cobblers. It's nothing to do with the iPhone specifically. People have been being hit by unexpected bills after using their phones abroad since.. well since people started taking their mobile phones abroad. The iPhone even has a switch in the settings that basically says 'if I'm not in my home country, for christ's sake don't access the data network under any circumstances'. If some Dimbleby hasn't remembered to switch that switch or at least take his/her phone out of 'push' mode before they go abroad, more fool them. 'Thick people end up with unexpected bill' is not an iPhone problem story. It would happen exactly the same with an Android or WinMo phone. Jon

Absolutely Mind you if you are too stupid to take an expensive phone with you on holiday and not switch it onto airplane mode so you can use other features without calling/using data.... then many deserve it.

I would agree, but some of these people claim that they turned roaming off.

I suspect they didn't turn it off and are trying it on

That is a very probable answer. Though TBH I turn my phones off when abroad unless I want to ring someone, and even then if I am going to be there a while I put in a local SIM.

Actually taking an old phone is probably a better option. Though the ability to access the internet when abroad can be very handy. Remember many would have been trying to access airline web sites during the volcano eruption. I was doing on my parents behalf when they were stuck out there.

Which is precisely what all the owners of them on this forum have been saying since launch day. (8+p Mark

The dude with the phone said that the signal strength thing bothered him as he could force the 3G signal to drop off when held "just so". I looked at my own iPhone 3GS and I was not even able to receive 3G in that area. The power of the press in action.
