This is friendly banter. You've clearly never seen a real war

true, it lacks the usual name-calling and caps-lock-cruise-control, but the point still stands that we ought to be past arguing about it, which some people seem to be.

besides, the OP was PC vs Mac flamebait, im surprised there isnt a forum rule against it (just checked hoping to find something to quote to backup my point, damn :P)

It's what I know, and I find it very good. Just my personal experience (not tried a Mac).

I absolutely hated SLED. It's what my netbook came with out of the box. I'm assuming it's better on supported hardware or maybe HP shipped a partial build, but I just gave up after a solid week of trying to resolve dependency errors and wrap drivers.

It came out of the box with dependency errors?

I'm not partaking. I'm sitting on the sidelines, observing and making the occasional comment.

I have the fire extinguishers, a stirrup pump, and buckets of water and sand on standby if required. I don't expect to use them, mind - we're all a bit too smart to need dousing, I reckon.

Although I've not used 7, one issue I have with Windows compared to OS-X is the non-Bash terminal. I know the windows command prompt is not necessarily inferior, it's just different to what I use on OS-X and *nix, so is a bit of a pain when scripts run on the other OSs I use.

But then again it's not just Bash, I know where things are on OS X and Solaris, Linux systems tend to confuse me too...

No they shouldn't - I like these debates. I am genuinely interested in reading different views.

I might start a thread with a poll to save the Mac Vs PC debates :) ;)

Actually it wasn't.

It was (as it is usually).

A) Me wanting to pick the brains of the PC experts here.
B) A bit of an excuse for friendly banter.

Flame wars may exist in other places but here we are friends. If we can't have a bit of banter between friends it is a poor thing.

On the subject of A) one of my patients asked me about the Mac range. The same old chestnut of are they good value came up. I explained that it depends on form factor. The integrated computers seem good value for money, the mini computers a little less so, the laptops tend to depend on when they are released so they are better value when just released but the price does not drop much over the year. On the Mac Pro I was outside my field of expertise. So who should I ask?

Sorry CC, that used to be the case, but the old MacBook Pros were overpriced and the new range hasn't improved things, they were made even more expensive, yet only contain mid-range components, whilst high-end machines from other name brands are less than half the price. Unless you have an investment in Mac software already, or you are out to pose, the new MBPs just don't make financial sense.

The 27" iMac makes financial sense, but it is the only machine that Apple make, where you can say that.

It is a real shame. When Apple shifted to Intel chips and came out with well specified machines (usually they had a month or so head-start over other manufacturers with new chips from Intel) and competitive prices, I had hoped that Apple was opening up to a new era (and is the reason why I got back into Macs, having stopped using them in 1990). But the prices have remained constant or have increased since 2006, whereas the average price for mid-range and high-end machines from other prestige brands have sunk by over 50%

Or you want a powerful, portable Mac computer because you are happy with the interface (GUI, keyboard shortcuts, mouse gestures, etc.)...

Buying a Mac isn't all about financial sense or posing. I bought my Mac Pro and spent a shed load more than an equivalent Windows machine because I like OS X and it's interface. With my applications I could pretty much switch to Linux or Windows, with a huge financial gain. But I'm happy where I am.

Really?

My Macs work hard for their living. I don't pose with them. They're scruffy, battered, covered in fingermarks. Because they're well screwed together with a deal of thought about the industrial design, they stand up to the pounding they get.

I wouldn't treat the £300 Windows lappy next to me the way I treat my MacBook Pro, that's for sure. 8-)

*sits with Heather*

My bf is using an old iBook G4 at home which he flings about literally and it never grumbles. I have an old G4 in my office which I use for my main music machine. I've got a Powerbook G4 which is still happily chugging along although it's getting a bit sad on space now so I'm thinking of putting a new hard drive in. Bfs relatively new Toshiba laptop got dumped as soon as he switched on to mac.

Have bought 4 new MacPros for Antenna over last couple of years and they have NEVER broken down and the only time I go near them is to install software or do an update for them.
