We all have things to lose from rioting. Personal freedoms from new legislation. Businesses. Homes. There are actually very, very few people in the country who genuinely have 'nothing to lose'.

Yes we all lose from the rioting even if we are not involved. Be it through reduced opening hours. Higher prices as a result of damage done, etc. 90% will have jobs to lose. It will be those who are already on the fringes of criminality that have little to lose. Prison is just an occupational hazard for them. The fact that there are riots popping up all over the country shows that there are enough with nothing to lose to make it happen. That is why governments need to concentrate on helping those at the bottom even if it is just to stop the disruption to the lifestyles of those at the top. Ed Milliband made a stupid comment today saying it was because that these kids did not have high enough aspirations that there is trouble. I suspect that many have excessively high aspirations, wanting to be singers on X factor or famous yet having absolutely no talent. If these peoples aspirations were realistic they might be plumbers or hairdressers or working in a supermarket. A living wage will help as well.

I've been told that the riots have moved into my area, and I know that they have set fire to the skip behind the corner shop, which is about a minutes walk from my house.

I've seen no sight of anyone yet,so I'm hoping they've carried on down the avenue, towards Rochdale Road, (and away from me!)

Anything to declare? ;) Can I put an order in for a new Playstation? ;)

Techy jokes "I'm a rioter. And smashing windows was my idea."

Eh? I'm a bit late to the party here but we're describing this as terrorism now? That'd never wash in court.

If you tried to file an information and charge someone under the Terrorism Act for what's happening in London the clerk of the court would give you your marching orders and suggest you look at a small law called the Public Order Act 1986.

It's all about charging people with the most appropriate offence, not any offence where on the face of it the wording might fit.

Just seen that baseball bat sales are up 52% this week. Interesting.

On a similar note:

Quote:
The Met has fresh advice to the owners of businesses in London on how to deal with disorder.

It says they don't have to wait to be attacked to use "defensive force" to protect their premises and can "use something to hand as a weapon" if they feel it's necessary "in the heat of the moment".

Are they including stolen hats as sales? Or are people buying them in preparation of looting? ;-)

Has baseball season started? That might be a reason. What about swag bags? Did you notice what else buyers bought? Buyers also bought balaclavas, hammers, hoodies.

However sales in expensive trainers have apparently hit an all time low

My route into work goes through/past the areas of Salford were the trouble was last night but i saw no real signs of anything other than a couple of boarded up shops. Whoever ran the cleanup job overnight, hats off to them.

I must say I very dissappointed with E-Bay. You'd think after all the support Twitter has given the rioters the tight b'stards could have managed a free listings weekend...

All those stolen electrical devices will have serial numbers, so will be traceable. Anything plugged into the networks can be tracked, blocked and bricked.

Well, here it is:

Quote:
Earlier, London Mayor Boris Johnson urged the government to reconsider its plans to cut police numbers, saying the argument had been "substantially weakened" by the riots.

What a shock.

I predict business as usual within a week. The Euro is still about to collapse, right?
