Football bores me to tears, but on the plus side, I drew the USA in the sweepstakes at work. So that's something.

I would doubt that very much if you supported a team and went to games reguarly, I thought the same before I went to a match. However this is what irritates me about the world cup is that people who have never given football a try is this is the only time such people watch football. International games are reguarly boring. Look at Uruguay vs France or England vs USA its like watching the italian league- loads of defence, lack of players committed forward, too much play in the midfield and as a result few goals and shots which makes for one type of game: a boring one. People tend to close their minds to certain culture and that just makes life less enjoyable. The amount of things I have called then liked makes a list that is fairly long if I thought about it and football is one of them. Play a sport you think you don't like, go to see it live and support a team its a lot better than bitching about sports.

How many times have Manchester city, chelsea, liverpool, Arsenal, Everton, utd, Tottenham and aston villa drew 1-1 or won 1-0 against lesser opposition in the premier league, carling cup or fa cup. Tottenham drew with leeds utd last season. Chelsea lost away at wigan last season didn't mean they wouldn't win the league, then went on to beat them ridiculous - 1 at home. In Football anything can happen on the day. I doubt we can win the world cup however we have got a good chance. There are some good solid teams out there: Argentina, Brazil, Ivory coast, France, Germany, Italy, Holland, Portuagal and Spain. All those teams could beat us on a good day and we could beat them on ours. The USA were never going to be pushovers they have some solid players: Tim howard (everton GK), Landen Donovan, Jose altidore, Spector, onyewu, and Clint dempsy (Fulham midfielder). We're not going to win every match in the world cup even if we win it there'll be draws and penalty shoot outs. We' have won against the USA if hart had been in net.

There are loads of top teams that have had games with low sucessful pass rate and low level of shots on target. The Premier league had last year loads of teams that had few of the attributes you would like from them when face with other EPL opposition. Hull, Wolves, Portsmouth, Blackburn, Westham, wigan, stoke, sunderland, bolton and birmingham all had low conversion rates and many unsucessful passes because when you are faced with similar opposition or greater it is difficult to get those shots accurate and passes. Internaional games tend to be played narrow, defensive and generally italian.

I have done. Still don't get it. I wasn't bitching, if I have to sit through weeks of this sudden out burst of 'patriotism' and pointless fanfare then so be it.

ITV HD viewers miss England's first World Cup goalI watched the game on ITV1 I guess, adverts just before and after each half. I remember watching F1 on ITV and that was annoying, but I don't think it is right with football when you have set times.

If one is diving so close to the limits that +/- 1% will make a difference then the error has already been made.

We didn't have the adverts on regular freeview.

England will never win international competitions when the majority of the players in the premier league are from overseas - we don't have enough home-grown talent to take on the best the rest of the world has to offer.

I watched the game with four women nattering about baking and other womenly things in the background. One of them, just as the ref signalled four minutes of stoppage for the second half, remarked, "Oh, they've changed ends!" Now where is that facepalm smilie?

Not sure I can agree with that. The only time we did win the team wasn't full of star players but they worked well as a unit. We're often far too preoccupied with reliance on individual players to win us games.

Was anyone watching on ITV HD?
It went to adverts about 30 seconds before the first goal and then came back about 30 seconds after it!
LOL

Didn't they do the same with a Liverpool v Everton FA Cup match last year?

Yup. 117 minutes of goal free football and they skip to an advert three minutes before the end of extra time just as Gosling scored the only goal of the game. Only on the HD channel this time but given the World Cup has been the reason for pushing HD (particularly freeview HD) in the UK there is probably hell to pay in ITV headquarters this morning. Luckily ITV are only guaranteed one more England game and that's a 3PM kickoff IIRC, so I can't imagine their world cup is going to be an overwhelming success advertising revenue wise. I'd imagine the company whose advert was shown instead of the goal won't be happy either - if there is such a thing as negative advertising, I suspect having your product on screen instead of an England goal in a world cup finals is as close to it as we're likely to see. As to the result etc : As usual the English media underplayed the opposition and overplayed England - England are a quarter final team on average and the US aren't far off that - plus they're the only team to beat Spain in about the last two years. And they're also the best other team in the group on form and FIFA ranking so a draw at this point is hardly calamitous. As to the question 'Does anyone think England will win the world cup after that game?' I haven't met anyone who thought England would win the World Cup before that game. Apparently one of the Sunday tabloids still thinks we will win it, but if you believe them you're an idiot, frankly.
