Are you going to wear it, or keep it in the box for a couple of decades?

If one is diving so close to the limits that +/- 1% will make a difference then the error has already been made.

TBH, it'll probably end up on eBay in a desperate bid to make some much needed cash.

Westboro Baptist Church had a website called http://www.godhatesoklahoma.com about the Tornado and somehow it has been pwned and sends the traffic to the Red Cross.

I was booked into shoot a graduation ceremony for a local language school this afternoon.
So I cleared it with work, dash home, skip lunch, get changed and dash off to the hotel. I get there with 5 minutes in hand, set my bag down and check out the room we're in, find the organiser and introduce myself.
"Oh, but we have a photographer. She's been here since 11am."
"Well, you booked me. You booked me back at the end of February, and confirmed the date and time in March."
<digs out phone, shows them the email>
"Oh, well, so sorry, send me your invoice anyway."
"Great. Have a nice afternoon."

Assuming, of course, they'll pay it...

Finally got the following things in the same room at the same time, following the discovery that someone has written and advanced Apple's Newton Connection Utility for Mac OSX:

Apple Newton 2000
Apple eMate
An old Apple serial cable
The funny Newton to Serial adapter
USB to Serial adapter
Newton update patch
NCX software

The aim is to apply the patch that lets the Newton's clock operate beyond 5th January 2010. Newton OS suffered a kind of "millennium bug" that meant that the clock would not work properly after that date. There are some clever folk out there that have formulated a patch to allow the clock to work. It had the potential to brick the Newton it was being applied to, but I ran the package install, and it worked nicely.

So I have a Newton and an eMate that have been returned to working condition. This is really more for me to say that my collection is "fully functional" rather than have a couple of old but non-working pieces. So that's me happy. I'll need to refurbish the eMate's battery as it's not holding a charge any more, and unlike the Newton, I can't just drop in rechargeables. This is a soldering iron job.

What is it with Apple and clocks? If they're not breaking their own they're stealing other people's

I expect they didn't think the Newton would last that long, or if it did that it would have got a fix in the next revision of the OS. As it was, Jobs famously binned his when he returned to Apple and closed down the Newton division (and, as a consequence, put me and the company I was working for at the time out of a lucrative contract with some Norwegian surveying company).

The fact that someone managed to fix this is staggering - there is no source code, and Newton OS updates were not supplied as patches, but as complete OS replacements, so whoever fixed this found a way in and how set the base date to something more recent. This for a PDA that has been rendered obsolete by the current swathe of tablets and smart phones.

There are people who still like their old devices and hate when they are no longer supported. Good for them.

I'm going offshore on Tuesday for three weeks.
Normally I'd call that a fail, but in this case it means I'll be back in the UK three days before Stafford Galli's last ever gig.
