Hmm. I think it's more honest to refer to them merely as trails then in that case. Or listen to the people who work in aviation, on the planes, and the understand the physics behind the effect, and call them contrails. Up to you.

Now, now, Alex! I don't refer to them at all, as I never need to. But I would only refer to them as chemtrails if I was discussing the possibility of such a thing.

Chemtrails, according to the conspiracy theorists are dropped from droplet apparatus, similar to crop spraying equipment, stuck on the wings of jets, droping specifc concoctions of chemicals to keep the population subserviant.

Chemtrails are very different from contrails, although "the government tries to hide them as contrails", but the planes tend to fly lower - otherwise the dispertion would render the chemicals useless.

Whether you believe in them or not, they are distinctly different to contrails.

Yes, there have certainly been instances of governments spraying their own people from planes to study dispersion and uptake of such a delivery method.
The true-believers of chemtrails, however, point to any airborne trail and say 'That's a chemtrail!'.

However, when presented with what is most likely the contrails left by regular, scheduled flights in and out of a nearby airport, to claim 'chemtrails' when contrails are more likely is like claiming to see alien craft resembling a Boeing 737 when you live near Luton Airport. There may or may not be an alien craft that looks like a 737, but the chances are it's EasyJet.
