What the hell's wrong with directors these days when it comes to lighting and filtering? Some of you guys might know... is it a way of avoiding hassle in processing and editing with a 'constant' while appearing moody or something? Because all it is is overused and pretty annoying IMO.

Probably nothing wrong with the lighting or filtering, that'll all have been done in post. It's called grading, and it's one of the later steps in post production.

I hate camera shake. Very rarely is it actually needed and even rarer to see one done well.

I recently watched a bit of Man on Fire and I'd forgotten how distracting Tony Scott's visual style was. Great film though.

On m'desktop, it doesn't show up in the forum post but if I copy the URL of the image and paste that into another tab it shows up fine. May just be the forum software having a bit of a brainfade.

Super 8

A bunch of kids who are making their own Super 8 movie find themselves in a tricky situation when they witness a train crash involving a military train and a truck. Something escapes from one of the derailed container trucks and people start disappearing. The kids try to figure out what's going on while the military take over their town and start evacuating the population.

Finally got around to watching this and I'd been looking forward to it. Written and directed by J.J. Abrams and co-produced by Abrams and Steven Spielberg no less, hopes were high. The film is very reminiscent of early Spielberg movies such as ET and Close Encounters both in terms of the script and the visual style. I enjoyed this a lot and the performances by the young actors are really good, especially Elle Fanning who was 12 at the time.

8 out of 10

The World's End

6.5/10

Not bad.
But not great.
Average.

Which is a disappointment if, like me, you've previously enjoyed Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz.
I'll try and keep spoiler's at bay, but let's just assume you've figured out two things:
1. You know it's about a pub crawl.
2. You've seen the advertising and the name's a bit of a clue.

Right then, so, this film falls between two stools.
On the one hand, it's speaking to my generation about ideas of feeling a bit lost in life when all your school friends are wildly successful and grown up.
Then on the other hand, it's a bit like Edgar's pitching to do Doctor Who. Which means you'll either love it, or like me, wish he wasn't.
Nice to see some faces from Spaced though, and there's a couple of references to the earlier stuff.
By all means go and see it, it did make me laugh out loud in places, but by the end I just felt a little as though they'd snatched defeat from the jaws of victory.

Hot Fuzz and Shaun were good, but you need to see them with a group of friends, none of them have been hilarious films when viewed on their own, it's all about the remembered one-liners shared in the pub afterwards. That's my feel anyway.

Not hilarious, but still good. I don't do the 'one-liners in the pub' thing any more because I'm not a student, but I still think they're good movies.

Greystoke: The Legend of Tarzan - Starts off brilliantly (it's very well made), becomes charming in the middle and then totally overstays it's welcome until the end :(

Solomon Kane - Puts me in mind of an English version of that awful Van Helsing film's 'style'... It's not terrible though, just average with a crap ending.

Wolverine

Summary: Pros - better than that PoS that was MoS. Cons - it still wasn't brilliant.

Essentially, it felt like there could have been a decent storyline there but the entire thing was written by someone who doesn't know decent storylines. I felt with a better writer(s), it could have been a good story. I didn't feel the action was as good as Origins but it was still entertaining. The main thing that annoyed me was the lack of blood on shiny blades - MoS suffered from the same thing but worse.

Cheers for that. I was gonna go see it at the cinema but 'average' isn't worth the hassle for me any more, short of being really bored or something
