That MOTU page is possibly the one I was absolutely fascinated with as a kid at my grandmother's.

I never got to have any MOTU action figures but I suspect it was down to cost - an action figure would cost £20 in todays money and Castle Greyskull would be around £70. But look at those toys - MASK, Transformers, MOTU, Star Wars, video games, calculator watches. :ugeek:

I can't see it being that major a drop, the consoles are permanently on sale one way or another and wouldn't have much further to go.

Although there was no time frame put on this move to a new chip architecture, we are now heading into the third year of the current generation, fast approaching the likely mid-point of the life-cycle.

That's quite disturbing when you consider it's been the weakest generation in terms of games by far. It's months until any big hitters turn up FFS.

There's no set rule on how long a generation is. That article seems to make the assumption this generation will be roughly 5 years, but there's no real basis for that. Platform owners would obviously like them to be as short as possible but the PS2 was the dominant platform for a decade and the PS3 is still fairly healthy roughly 8 years after it's UK launch.

My issue is how little seems to have been achieved at this point, and it's scary to think two years have already gone by. The first year is always weak, but somehow next to nothing has stood out in terms of releases. It all seems to be happening this year for some reason, like this gen caught the developers out somehow. Everything is certainly getting delayed, I know that much.

You're exactly right I think - a lot of the 'second generation' games - which is when a console really starts to get going - got delayed into 2016; No Man's Sky, The Division, Scalebound,.. Not sure why that is but I'd definitely agree this console generation feels 'stalled' as a result.

I do hope that this is not a automatic 'feature' that can't be disabled, because I sleep during the day.

Not really. I've had a DLNA client on mine since the day it launched and an app that will play various media off SMB shares since shortly after. And Plex came along shortly after launch too, although I don't personally use it. It's a nice bit of publicity for VLC but they're not actually doing anything new at all.

Excuse me, but I don't quite get why Apple should be working on such a tool. Surely it's the job of any given platform holder to write tools to migrate to their own platform as a way to attract people to switch to that platform? Google should have a tool to do that job and be saying 'not only do we have one, but ours has these extra features and is this much more reliable'. That's the free market way, after all...

I think the idea with VLC is that it's basically plug and play for hard drives and myriad file types, at least that's how I'm reading it. I know zilch about ATV.

Apple's 'we're doing very nicely, thank you!' was what made me laugh.

It's not just Apple with regards to time problems though, there's an awful lot of Android phones that just change the time on a whim, whether network or owner set. For whatever reason.
