The video is a bit over the top TBH (quite a lot of what it talks about isn't half as revolutionary as they seem to think it is) but it's a very, very nice phone and it seems to have just about levelled the playing field technology wise against the latest Android and WinMo phones. I suspect it will sell very well.

All I know is that it makes my iPhone 3GS look decidedly dated.

A comparison here…

http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/07/ipho ... -the-tape/

It is just 9mm thin for goodness sake and it is made out of glass.

I can't view the video because it's made from evil, but the specs for the phone are very impressive indeed. It sounds virtually indestructible. Does anyone know if it's water resistant?

I'm particularly thrilled by the screen resolution. It's close to that achieved in print, so finally Apple's fonts will not appear blurry. I really want a monitor with that dot-pitch, but I suspect it would be expensive and may suffer from poor viewing angles.

I have no doubt it will

That said HTC have always been the ones pushing the market in Android/WM devices, with things like onboard mini hdmi (not that apple would dream of using that  )

The resolution isn't THAT much higher over a normal WVGA smartphone (960x640 or some weird res like that) as 800x480 I have had in my phone since the iPhone 3G

Video calling...... on WiFi ONLY, yeah Apple will revolutionise the market by forcing everyone to be in a WiFi hotspot when they call someone. Please.

Well it looks like a very very nice phone indeed.

If the price is right, then I will probably get one in a few months time. However, I fear that they are going to try and lock me into a 24 month contract which I don't want to do.

The pay-as-you-go prices are likely to be astronomically high, so it seems I may have to wait a year. :|

Hopefully I will be pleasantly surprised. :P

Price you are looking at $200-300 + a 2 or 3 year contract in the US for one

You would be lucky to get one without a 2 (or even 3) year contract, and still paying for the phone!

IBM launched a TFT display with that pixel density about 6 or 7 years ago, but it cost a small fortune and didn't sell well...

As in splash resistant? Quite possibly. As in you could drop it down the loo? Almost certainly not.

I'm not sure I'd consider HDMI to be much more than a gimmick on a phone tbh, especially if you have to carry a particular cable round to use it. In the categories that matter on a day to day basis - screen quality, CPU speed etc the iPhone 4 is a catch up but not generally an overtake. It's not better than a HTC HD2 or a Droid Incredible but it's now pretty much in the same league. I was kind of expecting more in that regard TBH. I'm sure HTC will be ahead again in a few months, the most obvious way would be a phone that records 1080p video (properly, not at 15FPS or something). The one place it strikes me the rest do have to catch up is wifi. As far as I can remember, the iPhone 4 is the first phone to support 802.11N isn't it?

1) I don't believe Apple are 'forcing' anyone to do anything. They're not holding a gun to anyone's head screaming 'you must make video calls!!'
2) I think you're possibly somewhat underestimating how prevalent wifi is these days. I think I'd want to see some stats as to where people actually are when they make calls before I'd make a judgement on how onerous the limitation will actually be. For example, if the majority of calls are in fact made from home, what percentage of homes now have wifi?
3) That said, I'm not convinced video calling is a widely used feature anyway. It's not convenient and not private due to the way you have to hold the phone to use it and the quality has in fact never been much better than rubbish due to network bandwidth limitations. I'm actually of a mind that in this case Apple has implemented a 'me too' feature that everybody else could actually drop without many people complaining.

The HD2 supports N wifi although you have to enable it via a 3rd party mod & it sucks the life out of your battery.

I wonder how many people really want that (or 720p come to that...) on a phone though? I suppose if it's there it"ll get used, but even so. Similarly unconvinced about iMovie for iPhone, but on an iPad it might be interesting.

I'll be preordering (sorry Heather) mine next Tuesday!

I can't wait for it! I've been waiting patiently for it for 6 months and holding off from upgrading for that long!

It's finally here!

Woo!

There's no camera on the iPad so how would you capture the video?
Frankly I'm really pleased there's no camera on the iPad, because you'd feel a right berk going around holding the tablet Mac taking pictures on it.
