A fail for my boss, a win for me.

Last night he rang me up at 10pm.
Boss: "Lev, can you stay on the rig until the end of the well?
Me: "No, I'm not doing more than three weeks and that could easily turn into four."
Boss: "Oh, okay. We'll go ahead with the crew change on Wednesday as planned then."

Just seen a photo come back from the depot team in a physical damage case. There are fingerprints on the hard drive platter.

Just had a call from a company requiring an aggregates delivery.

Customer - "Hello, we've taken on a job at the Needle Lighthouse early next week. We need your best price for a truck load of 6F4 delivered to site"

Me - "It's The Needles Lighthouse, and it's only accessible via boat or helicopter"

Customer - "oh..."

Then, realisation dawns on just how much this job will cost them, and she momentarily forgets she is on the phone

Customer - "oh, f***ing sh!t, this is a nightmare"

Work fail:

The office keeps emailing out documents in .docx formats that they want us to fill in, even though they know our software is so old it can only open the older .doc format.

I think there is a plug in you can install to open later files. I guess your IT dept are not installing it.

We're now rolling out Office 2010 and there's even mention of Windows 7 soon. Oh the joys! :)

Are you going to give it a proper burial? A minutes silence at 11am?

Yep. That'd be the Office 2007 compatibility pack.

Do you leave the software they come with or use images? Being nosey as to how other people do things.

Here, I get budget for maybe 8 new machines a year, if that. I generally use the image they are delivered with, then remove the crapware and install the standard apps, then make an image, in case the user screws it up.

Acer are getting better, with their new Veritons. At first boot, it provides a list of crapware and asks which bits you want to install! The only bit they had pre-installed on the last machine was McAfee (not bad, at least the machine won't get infected during initial set-up and it uninstalls fairly cleanly) and Google Toolbar. Even all the Acer utilities were listed in the crapware to install dialog.
