Swmbo rather than me. Got a wedding invite a couple of weeks ago. A bit short notice but fine. Swmbo wanted to buy a new dress. Spent all day sunday with her shopping for it. Tried on loads. Found one she loves. I paid for it as a treat. She takes it home. Yesterday, deciding to be ahead, she ironed it. Or tried to, hadn't realised what setting the iron was on and managed to burn the outfit.

She now has only the day before the wedding to go out shopping again.

Are you in need of brownie points? If so, just say "Oh well, these things happen. Let's go and buy you another outfit, dear*"

If you don't need any brownie points in the bank, but let's be honest, who doesn't, say that thing anyway, as you'll get a shed load for the bank.

*replace the final word with your pet name of choice.

Sadly, Doctor Martens gets a mention here too. My recent boots purchase requires me to register a code number with them online so my new boots are eligible for the replacement programme.

It all looked so good, but their form (a) doesn’t have the model of boots I bought, and (b) doesn’t list the store where I bought it.

Anyway, I got on to them via Twitter, and they told me what to put on the registration form with the points above. They said it wouldn’t affect any claims I made, so that’s OK (my worry was that if I put in the wrong info, it might somehow invalidate it).

Anyway, click the submit button, and the form re represented with a green box saying “thanks, expect an email”. No email. Also, having the form returned like that usually indicates that something is wrong. Anyway. back to Twitter. They checked that the registration had gone through (it has). So that’s OK. They said that if I had not reported the problems, they wouldn’t have known that there were things going wrong. Hopefully they’ll “put the boot up’ the IT department. Oh, dear.

Email arrived 2 hours later. :?

Irritating yes but it sounds like you've at least finally got the proof bit you need for any future claims.
Also I trust you have very carefully checked the small print.

Yes -there are some exclusions - if the boots have been abused is one, industrial use is another (so no pesky killing them on a building site if that’s your job). You have to return the existing pair, so you can’t claim a new pair for your mates and hang on to the old ones. I think they expect them to last 4 - 5 years before they need replacing.

It’s good to know that the registration processes worked, even though they were a bit flaky and didn’t work as expected.

I wonder what counts as abuse. I have a pair of Winsted Canvas Boots and after 3 months of walking on average 6 miles a day (nearly all normal city walking rather than out in the wilds) I have worn the tread completely off the heels. The only reason any item of footwear that lasts me longer than 18 months is because I don't wear it very much. I Like the idea of Boots or Shoes For Life, but I'm worried that with my wear rate they aren't going to last as long as Dr Martens would like.

Amazon are at it again, in Germany.

The press is reporting that they offer a 6% bonus if you aren't ill during the year, which sounds good... But you only get the bonus if the rest of your team is also not ill.

Not only has this allegedly led to cases of bullying of workers who have chronic illnesses, but it is also illegal to make any personal bonuses dependent on the performance of other persons.

One of our electrical apprentices turned off the power to our second building this morning! That wasn't what he was supposed to have done...

At least the UPS kicked in and the backup servers carried on working. The Superloader wasn't as fortunate, the flick from mains to UPS didn't agree with it and it locked up.

My boss sent me over to sort it out and to skin the apprentice, alive!

The Boot for Life that I have are a version of their 460 style - the “classic” 8 hole boot. The sole on your canvas boots looks different - possibly thinner? They look more “trainer” than “boot” if you get what I mean. A regular pair of DMs will last me about 3 years before the soles give up - they usually split or crack. I walk and/or cycle pretty much every day. Not six miles, but a enough. The Boots for Life soles are made slightly thicker and more hardwearing. There is a feeling of more heft from the For Life boots than the regular boots of the same style. I guess my advice would be to go to a Doctor Martens shop and see if they have a pair you can look at and make a judgement from there.

You should not do that!
He has actually done what you should have done in the firt place and tested your back-up and recovery proceedures when the power fails.

Blurb books has failed me for the first time. (8+(
I'm looking to create a larger than average book (greater than 250 pages).
I have so far used Blurb for all my previous book publishing needs (five books), but I also normally select Premium Lustre paper with a hardback image-wrap.
Blurb limits the above selections to 240 pages - in fact, any paper selection other than standard is limited to 240 pages.
I don't want standard paper.
This book is going to be a special one-off.

No other online self-publish site seems to offer what I'm looking for, so I'm going to have to go to specialist printers and binders now. *sigh*

The contents of the book have been carefully curated from over 20,000 source items.
The contents of the book are not the problem.

Mark, what's the print spec of your book and how many do you want? I may be able to help.
