So, I was driving back home from the supermarket and happened to be behind a DHL/Tradeteam delivery truck. I assume they specialise in booze deliveries.
Anywho, they had an ad on the back looking for drivers with the following:
Quote:
Interested? Text
BEER to <5 digit text number>

Unfortunately I couldn’t get a photo as I was driving .

Is it just me or is conflating beer and (hgv) driving maybe not the best plan.
I can see what they’re aiming for but it’s a bit of a worry this got signed off IMHO.

Maybe they selected that word because it's easy for drivers to remember, until they can safely sent the text message...

Some of you may know that every now and them, I get emails to my Gmail account for people with the same name as me. They put the name + @gmail.com in and assume it's the person they are thinking of, or themselves. Gmail isn't psychic. Those emails come to me.

On Friday, I got a series of emails from a web hosting outfit in Panama telling me that my account is active. The emails included log on details, including the password (or a major portion of it) in plain text. Also the invoices, which are PDFs, include the postal address of the person they are intended for. This isn't invoice spam - this looks like someone has really registered a domain name and ordered some Wimdows + Plesk hosting. Oh, yeah. Those "please verify your email address" type emails never happened. So they are dealing with him blind.

In this kind of case, I try to contact the sender of the email, and usually I get a reply. Not this time, despite three attempts using three different email & forms on their site. One attempt was rejected because the email address used did not match (I use a . to separate my first and last names, most of these emails don't - I'm not fiddling with my email settings just for this).

The invoices have been coming in daily. Today's carries a warning that the account will be suspended. I guess when the Bank Holiday is over, the other person will find that his account no longer works. He'll contact support, and not get an answer because it will come my way.

I guess this cycle will continue until he either realises his mistake, or gives up. I may eventually log in (I'll get the password reset emails), change the password and leave it. I've done that before to stop any further activity, and that seems to do the job.

I get so many emails, which are sent to johnvella [at]gmail.com it's ridiculous. I have tried contacting him, repeatedly, but have received no reply. I have replied to emails, asking them to phone him to let him know there's a problem, (these are companies which I know from other emails have his number) and, although they have assured me that they will do so, I am still receiving emails for the guy.

I've given up trying. It's just more junk to delete.

Except for the ones from his dog's vet, wishing the dog happy birthday. I keep those for sentimental reasons. Not really.

2008 Vauxhall astra estate 1.3 TDI went to the dump because of 'can-bus communication error to the ECU' (very common, apparently, with Vauxhall). no one (and i mean no one) will even attempt to fix it, main dealer only. £2000+ to get it fixed.
so we had to bin it and buy another car. this time its a Ford 1.4 petrol. we will not be buying another Vauxhall (not even if they gave one), bye bye Vauxhall ...

You are not the first person to tell this story. I know someone who junked a perfectly good Vectra for just the same reason.

I have similar worries for my car (as do the other owners in the country I know). The ECUs will fail eventually, and Merceds aren't in the habit of letting non Mercedes owners have spares (you have to give them a VIN number apparently).

There are sites out there that tell you how to roll your own ECU if you have a car you feel is worth saving.

I worry about electric cars - no getting away from killing a car based on planned obsolescence. Not like the good old days when you could get a bit from AutoPart and carry on.

In the tuning world there are aftermarket ECU's which replace the manufacturer's design. I don't want to be too provocative, but generally, the motor trade is populated by fitters and it is rare to find someone who knows what they are doing. If you keep abreast of project Binky's developments you may also be aware of Mighty Car Mods, a couple of Aussie likely lads who also have a youtube channel, where such witchcraft is employed. Anyway to cut a long story short it is a thing. Do more research chaps.

reading the forums about can-bus comms error with vauxhalls was a massive eye opener its not something you check when buying. but the cost of repairs to the car is enormous (main dealer only). in this instance it would have cost as much to repair as the purchase price with no way of knowing it would even work properly after the repairs. far easier to replace the car with one that does not suffer from these problems ie. a ford. no wonder vauxhall was bought out. we have now decided no more vauxhalls anymore looks like its going to be ford from now on ...

Currently in talks with Virgin Trains East Coast over a refund for the journey up to Scotland last Saturday.
My journey was from Peterborough to a place called Croy. Visiting the parents and that’s the most convenient station to meet at. Croy is between Glasgow and Edinburgh so I have to change at Edinburgh.
So, the VTEC train was delayed by 28 minutes. This meant that I missed the scheduled connection in Edinburgh to get to Croy. At the time of night I arrived there’s only one train an hour that stops at Croy so I was actually an hour late getting to my destination.
Now, VTEC have rejected my ‘delay repay’ claim on the grounds that my delay was only 28 minutes.
Their T&Cs don’t say they only consider their portion of the journey and in any case, the delay to the entire journey actually seems to make them liable to pay compensation under the National Rail Conditions or Cariage regardless of any internal procedures.

Further, the delay on the VTEC train was largely down to problems with the train staff and the train - a miscommunication between the train manager and the driver, a door that was reluctant to lock at a station and a signalling problem (fair enough the last one was presumably outside their control but it wasn’t the major contributor to the delay).

Will see what they say but I suspect I’ll have a fight on my hands :x

My employer just flew me up to Aberdeen for a 10 minute demonstration of a product that was no more informative than the thirty second video of the same thing that a co-worker sent me. What a waste of money.

I'm guessing that Skype* wasn't an option?
