Thought I'd start a new topic as I have a random question and nowhere to put it. :D

Rechargeable batteries. How long are they supposed to last before they die?

Depends on the charge/discharge cycle. Most have a finite number of times they'll take a charge.

Makes sense.

They're in my house phones you see, they've started to die after about 15-30 minutes of talk time. They work fine with normal batteries but obviously we can't put them back in their caddies then.

I guess their a few years old now and probably won't have been the best of batteries in the first place.

The quality of the batteries matters a lot too. The generic crap we got with our cordless phones lasted barely three months. We replaced them with Duracell rechargeables, and they're still going strong 9months on.

It was a thought I had, perhaps we've been lucky that they've lasted this long.

Edit: As a complete noob in this area can any AAA rechargeables be used or would I have to stick closely to the 1.2V 5550mAh of the originals?

Any should be fine. All rechargeable AAA batteries are 1.2v

Thanks guys. It wasn't until they started running out that it actually occurred to me that I have never, in all my years, actually bought any rechargeables. :shock: :D

I did indeed mean 550mAh. Funny, I'd already done a typo and put them as 50mAh, then it looks like I went overkill. :D

The generic ones I got with my Siemens cordless phone are still going strong 8 years later...

Do either of the above suffer drom drain. I have some rechargable batteries that slowly drain away thier charge if not used for a few months. Is this all of one type or do only some retain their charge

All batteries suffer from drain.

Alkalines are designed to hold their charge for a bit longer so that they can be stored shipped and sold. Rechargeables OTOH, are designed to be charged and used in fairly quick succession. It's really not seen as much of an issue with rechargeables precisely because they can be recharged.
