Post subject:  Mobile telephone recommendations

Hi all,

I'm looking for a new phone, and at first I thought I'd go for something cheap yet comfortable. My first problem is that I can't find anything that looks like an equal or a small step up from my current phone.
So, I started looking at nicer phones, I'm currently eying up the HTC Wildfire.
My second problem is that I'm looking at unlocked phone, I've got a plan that I like. Not going with a contract seems to really hike up the price of everything.

Any advice would be excellent (including on where to buy). My upper limit is really £250, though cheaper would be better, I'm really looking for value for money (more features, ability to add features, life span is a big factory for me).

Thanks very much,

Ben

What is the plan you are with? Could you not contact your current network and work out an arrangement with them (i.e. I'll sign up to the plan I have for 12 months if you give me a phone)

I'd suggest one of those old black bakelite ones, with the braided cord to the receiver and a little tray for important phone numbers underneath.

I'm with Tesco, using their £6/month deal.

I was, as you correctly surmised no doubt, being flippant. 8-)

Indeed, though I've changed the thread title just incase anyone else decides to be "flippant"

HTC Desire?

£285 from O2 if you have a friend on the network you can buy a sim free, o2 locked one (Tesco Mob piggy back off O2 IIRC)

Wildfire is very underpowered tbh, HVGA screen and not much going for it

Aye, thats what I thought when I compared the Desire and the Wildfire.

I'm now looking at Tesco's iPhones, it's not too much more than the Desire and I'm quite liking the price of the contract.

The wildfire is good, but has a low resolution screen. The Desire is a similar spec with a much better screen, but costs more.
Whatever you go for I'd recommend an Android 2.1 or 2.2 OS. I love it.

One point, does your current contract have data? If it doesn't, you'll either need to add it to the contract or you'll need to turn off wireless data on the 'phone, sort of defeating the object.

I'd go with the Desire, if you can.

Currently I've got free minutes and texts. If I look at an iPhone from Tesco they do 250 minutes, unlimited texts and 1GB data/month for £20 which doesn't look bad, the contract is only 12 months too.

I originally was looking at that contract but the difference between that and the £35 per month contract was minimal and it came with more minutes, and was cheaper upfront as well.
