Post subject:  If I find the thieving sods
Some time last night some scumbag ripped the back doors off of my van and took all my power tools, parked outside my house and I never heard a thing.

All in all about £2500 worth and as I am self employed that means no work until I can replace them, I still cant believe how they got in there is steel mesh behind seats and over back windows + 2 extra locks on back.

They just ripped one of the back doors clean off and smashed side window for good measure, left all the hand tools of course no money in those.

Just found out my tools are not covered by van insurance as well, the arseholes have stolen my means of earning a living just for a few quick pounds in their pockets.

Police are on the way but don't expect much from them going by past experience, even reporting the crime was a farce the questions they ask what ethnic back ground are you, what's that to do with any thing and how did they break in when I said they ripped the door off I was asked if they used a crowbar :evil: that's when I lost my rag told them that's what they are supposed to find out and I was not a scene of crime officer.

Work has been very tight for a while now so I cant afford to replace all the tools at the moment, but cant work with out them catch 22.

That's terrible news mate, and I can empathise with how crap the police can be when something like this is reported.

Can I ask why the tools weren't covered under the van insurance, I'd have thought anything like this would be covered under basic business insurance?

That's not a great start to the day. :(

I hope everything gets sorted out okay in the end. The plod sound like box-tickers, which doesn't bode well.

I know it's a bit "closing stable doors after the horse has bolted", but you may want to consider extra insurance to cover your tools in future.

Having been in a trade, I can appreciate the situation that you are in. You can't get far without power tools (or fast in any case). I take it that you have insurance in other places besides your van's insurance?

You wouldn't believe how things are getting. The powers that be want us (emergency ambulance crews) to obtain a patient's sexual orientation. :shock: Thankfully, our equalities officer is fighting that one on the basis that it is a totally [LIFTED] up idea.

Well, that's precisely the point. They are hardly likely to answer the question accurately if they don't want to or if the circumstances don't allow it- e.g. if a guy is secretly "bi" but his wife is standing next to us.

I can't think of a single suitable moment for us to ask a question like that AND get a worthwhile, accurate answer on every occasion AND not get loads of hassle as a result. If we don't get accurate or meaningful answers, as noted, it is pointless.

A few months ago someone broke into our shed - they had to walk down our front garden and down the side of our house, it had a decent lock on but not much else but we also figured that because it was jam packed with stuff they would make alot of noise, well they didn't - after repairing the damage and putting a better lock on approx 2 weeks later they broke in again, luckily my brother works nights and just turned up at around 6am to find they were taking our gas welding gear down the road - he gave chase but lost them - (luckily for them cos my bro is a HGV mechanic/has a temper and wouldn't look out of place in something like cage rage :twisted: ) but they didn't manage to nick anything this time so it wasn't too bad - anyway, our shed is now like fort knox - cameras, lights, alarms & locks. At least they've never been back.

I guess this means you don't have anywhere more secure to keep them overnight?

When you do replace them, it might be worth investing in some form of secure storage (i.e. a secure metal box welded to the floor of the van) and some form of high visibility security marking on the tools themselves that can't be removed without damaging the tool in the process.

That just sucks. I sincerely hope you find them, and at least put those hand tools to good use!

You can guarantee the scumbags who did it haven't worked a day in their lives, and wouldn't give a second's thought to the cost to your livelihood. :evil:
