Post subject:  TomTom route planning help.
I'm trying to plan a route from home to work but I don't want to use the route TomTom gives me.

I cant use the go via method as it would take hours and I don't know the correct postcodes or addresses.

Google Maps allowed me to adjust the route exactly as I wanted but when you export the route to the TomTom it only saves the endpoint and gives it default route again.

Any ideas on how I can get the route into the TomTom?

Have you looked at the preferences in TomTom, such as Fastest Route, Quickest Route etc? That can give you different routes. Or are you planning it using the PC software?

Which model TomTom is it, some of the newer models have Smart Routes, which can give you a different route on the device depending on the time of day you set off, taking into account busier times of the day (school runs, rush hour etc). The older models don't have Smart Routes.

I have to ask, though, if you already know the route you want to take, why do you need the Sat Nav?! ;)

I use NoteNav™ - Write a blow by blow account on A5 bits of paper and sellotape them to the dash, rip the top one off when you're done with it, on the return trip sellotape in the reverse order :wink:

Other than ripping bit's off, that's my general way of doing it too. At least it was until I got an Android phone a few months ago.
I always look at a map first though.

Actually that is quite a good idea. Especially if alone or with an idiot co driver. Number them so that that they can give you the instructions in the right order.

I sometimes couple it up with new technology, Google street view junctions so you know what you're looking for, include that in your instructions or print the picture out (not quite as convenient)

My NoteNav™ for my drive home on Wednesday will look a bit like this:

A90 -> Dundee, Perth
A9 -> Dunblane
M80/A80 -> Glasgow
M73
M74 South
M6 South to J15
A500 -> Stoke
A50 -> Derby.


Job done. :lol:
I might go via Edinburgh rather than glasgow, I haven't decided yet.

I do the same as L3v1ck, except with Post-Its. Used them on the motorbike as well, stuck under the clear plastic of the tank bag. Even with the built-in Sat-Nav in my old Mondeo and having the Navigon software on my iPhone, I still use Post-Its or printouts from Google Maps.

Try going out and driving the route a few times?
When I was driving all over the place for work, I'd sometimes do a dry run the day before.
If it's your route home from work, surely you'll drive it often enough to not warrant a satnav?

Yes but if you are a long way from your usual area then it helps to have it printed out or a map, and it would be expensive to to do dry runs on long routes, as well as time consuming.

My location work could be a two hour drive away, some days.
Is the OP moving sites, or just at a single workplace? It sounded like a fixed location.

Either way, I'm advocating the 'dig out a map and learn it' technique.
