I have come to realise that I am a lot more open about expressing my opinions not just to people who are being cocks but in general than some people.

In the past: there is a sandwich shop near work and I've been there with a colleague before. Whenever I go there I can ask for literally 3 different sandwiches and they will tell me each time that they don't have any bacon/ham/turkey/brown bread/mayo/etc... in stock. It got to the point one day where I had exhausted my list of things I would like to eat so I said "thanks but I'll go somewhere else", walked out of the shop and went elsewhere (this was the second time that I had done that) (I don't go there any more).

My colleague then reported back to me that the woman in the shop had made a big deal about the fact that I come in, ask for loads of stuff and then walk out without buying anything. Erm... is it just me or should I then stay in the shop and buy something that I actually don't want to eat just because I went in there?!

Anyway, today: Went to get some fish and chips for lunch with a guy from work. There's a place round the corner that does a light meal for next to no money :D Anyway, I was first and my colleague was stood to the side. I ordered and I was being served. During which time a guy walked in and stood behind me so close that his toes were touching my heels. He then moved to the side and went up to the counter and stood with his foot on top of my foot.

I moved to the side to get a bit more room. As I had been finished serving the lady asked who was next and this guy started ordering. I said "No, sorry Chris is next". He then stood back and said (in a sarcastic tone) "I'm sorry Chris do you want to go now." Then as Chris was being served he said to the next guy "Are you also called Chris? Do you want to go next?", etc...

As we were eating them outside my colleague made a big deal about it saying I was making a fuss etc...

Normally I'm fairly laid back but I can't stand people being c*cks that way. If I hadn't said anything then he would have been served and my colleague would still be waiting there.

I realise that the title of the thread isn't exactly what it's about but it's what I was thinking. Most of the time my colleague would prefer to "not make a fuss" and let people walk all over him.

I've definitely done the first and would probably have done the second.

In the first case, does the shop have a list up of what fillings, bread etc they have? If they have that and the things you are asking for are on that, then they've no real grounds for complaint. if they don't have a list of things then

a) They probably should
b) They can probably reasonably expect people to say 'OK, what have you got?' but even then they can't complain if someone says 'well, I don't really fancy any of those things but thanks anyway'.

In the second case the guy is just a moron, who obviously thinks he has a right to be served before all those other inferior people. I've done a few service jobs (mostly pubs & bars rather than fish & chip shops) and if someone did that I always made a very obvious point of asking the person they've just pushed in front of what they wanted before the pusher in got served.

IMO, as long as you're polite and not belligerent you're well within reason to do what you did. In the first case it's up to the shop to serve you not the other way round and in the second case Idiots have to be told they're being idiots, or they'll never stop.

wtf? hes lucky the place you are are in seems a soft touch, if he did that where I usually hang round hed prob be in hospital.

Yep, a big list on a black board behind the counter. I have only ever asked for sandwiches from that list.

I used to let ppl walk all over me years ago, wish I hadnt but I was weak minded :( nowadays noone walks over me, not even the police for example

I'm afraid whilst you might be brazen about the 5-0, chicks are continually walking all over you, if your posts here are indicative of a wider picture.

I dont let people walk all over me. In the past a cock of a boss did a little but then if you need a job it's difficult to jab a biro in his eye and get away with it.

I still find though that there are situations when its not worth doing/saying anything. Sometimes you can just do without the hassle.

In your examples though I would 1) tell her I'd buy a sandwich if she actually had anything to sell and 2) you were right to say something to that guy jumping the queue.

In the first situation, I'd have walked off too. If they don't have the choices that I want, I will go off and eat something that I do want elsewhere.

In the second situation, the shop assitant usually asks if I want anything else, at which point I'd ask said mate what he wanted. Essentially cuts out the pusher without raising a fuss.

I've become less and less softer and easier-going as I get older. Initially I used to be happy to stay back for an extra hour (unpaid) to help out. Nowadays, as long as there's no major problems, I'm gonna bugger off on time.

I've had similar things happen - I told one fella that if he tried to get any closer he'd have to marry me. Delivery is everything with that one though. Striking the right 'ho-ho isn't this a lot of fun, but look mate, I'm not a small chap and I'm no mood for little [LIFTED] like you' is important.
