Post subject:  Question about a song

Have 4Music on in the background. They'd just played Mercy by Duffy. Now I could have sworn that I've heard this song ages ago, well before it was ever sung by Duffy.

Does anyone know whether someone else has sung the song, or at least something with the chorus line of "Begging you for mercy"?

Or is this part of ageing and I should get my slippers and cocoa and stick to the Antiques Roadshow?

I know what you mean. I'm sure it reminds me of an older song also.

I'll keep thinking.

It usually takes a couple of days or so for me to finally work out this kind of thing :P

Quote:
The BBC Chart Blog compared the song to Aretha Franklin's "Chain Of Fools" and "Where Are You Baby?" by Betty Boo.[13]

The introduction to "Mercy" samples the opening bars of "Stand by Me" by Ben E. King. The sound is slightly different to that of "Stand by Me", however, because "Mercy" uses 1 5 and b7, instead of 1 5 and major 7. This change creates a "bluesey" sound. The song is written in the style of a 12 bar blues, using the chords I, IV and V.

it's not so much the melody so much as the lyrics. Hence pcernie's post is useless to me.

Is there another song that has used "begging you for mercy" or maybe something similar as the chorus?

The other thing is that it may have been played so many times in the past that I've somehow thought it was an older song than it really is.

My brain thinks there's a song from the 70s that used similar lyrics, but I dunno really...
