Is this jumping on the now empty Soprano's bandwagon, right?
Goodfellas is an ace film and I'm really not sure I'd want to see it make the transition to a TV show.

There is already a new series with Steve Buscemi called Broadwalk just started in the states set during the prohibition.

You pretty much have to accept that crime shows sell these days, making something like this inevitable by TV standards

Also, and I'm not really sure of the ins and outs, TV seems to be where damn near everything's headed that isn't a guaranteed cinematic moneymaker...

Unless it's an actor/director indulgence then it pretty much has to make money at the pictures for it to get a cinematic release.
TV is slow-burn material. As long as the pilot is strong enough to get a full season commissioned then there's 20+ hours of programming that can be cultivated into a strong finale, which is all that seemingly matters these days to get picked up for a second outing.

I think a good finale is a little harsh, but a lot of stuff is getting picked up from a stronger back 9, or even a couple of better later eps in a short season. For every Fringe or Supernatural, there's dozens of Vampire Diaries and One Tree Hills.

The Sopranos was what it was. It was superb television and a modern classic. But releasing this now would be akin to the Spidey reboot IMO - people will watch it and that will be enough for the suits, but it's too soon.

Martin Scorsese preps Goodfellas prequel with Nicholas Pileggi

When we first head about the possibility of a Goodfellas TV series, we thought it was a joke. And not a particulary funny one.

But writer Nicholas Pileggi has not only confirmed it's happening, he's revealed that Martin Scorsese is involved. And it'll be a prequel.

“I want to do it, Marty wants to do it, Warner Bros wants to do it. Of course, you can’t pick up from Goodfellas, since we murdered everybody, or rather, everybody was murdered! There’s nobody left.”

"But I think we're going to figure out a way to do the early years - sort of a prequel."

We're not sure why they're so keen, Goodfellas is a perfect film. And, anyway, haven't we already had a Goodfellas TV series, called The Sopranos?

Hmm, seems it'll be using the name and that's about it...
