I've noticed that internet services are becoming more efficient and software on your PC is becoming slower. This is because I think that while internet services like last.fm are tied to ever increasing broadband speeds, traditional software is stuck with antiquated hard disk speeds. My iTunes takes so long to load my music library now that I'd rather just click on last.fm and listen to music immediately. What internet based software do you use and would you consider going completely internet based (office software, photo editing etc) ? What internet based software do you recommend? |

I'm kind of with Mark. I blog via a browser/email, but otherwise all software resides on my drive. |

This year my group cwk group has decided that we're going to use Google Docs instead of SVN+LaTeX which is my preferred solution. I'm already getting annoyed with the lag at times. I much prefer using my own text-editor! |

Hmm I think that if they incorporated photo editing and things like that into Facebook it would soon become normal to use internet based stuff. While I was on holiday and away from any computer with a semblance of RAM/processing power, I started using online photo and video editing, it was a god send, especially considering that some internet cafes stopped you downloading software onto the PC. |

Same here. I really don’t trust The Cloud for computing, and for things like photo editing, I doubt any of the Javascript driven cloud apps can match those I have on my hard drive. I certainly don’t want to throw a GB file around like that. |

Facebook uploader is rubbish, so having a usable photo editor would likely be next to useless. Cloud computing has a massive way to go before it becomes a viable method for me to use. Mark |

I like things like EC2, for massively computational stuff, where you can just add new VMs and turn them on and off at will as your load varies. But for interactive apps I think it's rather bleh. |

While hard drives might be slow, my internet is far slower! A 50mb file can take around five to ten minutes to download, iPlayer is mostly unusable. My main computer is an 8-core beast with 6GB of RAM, across three computers I have over three terabytes of storage which will be upgraded soon. |

I don't recommend it at all. It's all well and good if you're in Hong Kong with a 100Mb connection; some of us aren't so lucky. Besides which, I'm not sure I want my data to not be under my control. |
