Discovery 3D Net IDs First Shows

By R. Thomas Umstead

SILVER Spring, Md.--The 3DTV network coming from Sony, Discovery Communications and IMAX has identified its first wave of original and acquired content.

Series set to debut on the new 24/7 service when it launches in 2011 include: Abandoned Planet, exploring places devoid of humanity; Africa in 3D, showcasing the richness of the continent; China, giving a behind-thescenes look at the world’s most populous nation; and Jewels of the World, transporting viewers to UNESCO World Heritage sites where natural and cultural gems are catalogued and protected.

Exclusive 3D premieres include theatrical releases such as Imax’s Into the Deep 3D, Sony’s animated Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs and Monster House; and the documentaries Attack of the Giant Jellyfish and Magnificent Desolation: Walking on the Moon 3D.

While the programming announcement includes a mix of original and acquired content, Tom Cosgrove, president and CEO of the joint venture told Multichannel News the network will focus mostly on originallyproduced content.

“As we go forward the emphasis on the channel is building the best made for 3D TV library in the world,” Cosgrove said. “You’re going to see a greater emphasis on original content made for the channel.”

Cosgrove said the network’s launch is still slated for early 2011, but would not disclose a specific debut date nor an official name. Cosgrove also added a pair of top lieutenants: Tim Pastore is vice president of development and production, and Rod Riegel is vice president of marketing and communications. Pastore was director of production and development at Discovery Channel, and Riegel was director of communications at The Hub, another Discovery joint-venture network.

Earlier, Discovery veteran Julia Rao was named chief financial officer, and Mark Ringwald, previously with AmericanLife TV Network, was named director of scheduling and acquisitions.

3D TV Venture Unveils First Programming Plans

Partners Sony, Discovery, Imax contribute content, order originals

The 3D TV network joint venture of Sony Corp., Discovery Communications and Imax on Monday unveiled its first wave of programming, including originals and acquisitions.

Hour-long original series announced Monday are "Abandoned Planet," produced by Flight 33 Productions, which explores entire cities abandoned by people, "Africa in 3D" from Aquavision Television Productions, as well as "China" and "Jewels of the World," about UNESCO's World Heritage sites, from Natural History New Zealand.

U.S. premieres will include Sony films "Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs," and "Monster House," Discovery documentary "Attack of the Giant Jellyfish" and "The Haunted," in which a paranormal team investigates stories of animals and their owners "who are experiencing the unexplainable," and Imax specials "Into the Deep 3D" about the undersea world and "Magnificent Desolation: Walking on the Moon 3D," narrated by Tom Hanks.

Tom Cosgrove, president and CEO of the venture, said the unnamed 24/7 channel, which launches next year, wants to provide viewers with "immersive, entertaining programming as we build the most extensive library of original and exclusive 3D content available anywhere."

Research firm DisplaySearch said last week that 3D TV is not growing as fast so far as TV set makers had expected, due to high prices and a lack of content, but the technology should become mainstream by 2014.

It forecast that 3.2 million 3D TV sets will be shipped this year, including just less than 1.6 million in North America, but the figure will grow to 90 million-plus in 2014.

Sounds intetresting, but as I bought a new HD TV last December, I’m not likely to replace it for a good few years yet, and I’ll only go 3D if I don’t need funny goggles. Unless you are transmitting anaglyphs, of course!

You still need a 3D TV to watch the 3D broadcasts - unless you know something I don’t.

Ah yeah they didn't make a big point about that. Got 3D tvs here but would rather go home to watch TV than stay at work.

I am in the same boat. I bought a HD TV for the bedroom only a couple of months ago. I could replace my main CRT at some point but can't see the point for a considerable period.
