Empire magazine is doing a slow reveal of the Tintin film. The blue jumper is the giveaway. http://www.empireonline.com/reveal/ I still don't know what to make of this film idea. |

Honestly? This probably isn't something I'd watch at the cinema. More likely DVD or TV. Tintin was okay but I never really got into it properly. |

I hink it’s this iconic image of Tintin and Snowy:  It’s going to be a CGI film. Pater Jackson once said that they will be unmistakably Hergé’s characters, but presented in a very realistic way. These teaser images confirm this, and is why I am feeling cautious. One of the things about Hergé’s style is how things are drawn in a very minimalistic fashion, and I am not sure why extra detail needs to be added. That said, the small snippets of the images do seem to be right so far. The blue for the jumper is right, the fluffy tufty tail of Snowy. I really hop Jackson knows what he is doing. You do have to remember that all of this will be overseen by Moulinstart, the company which owns the rights to Tintin and Hergé’s legacy. They guard his creations with deeper jealousy than Disney defends Mickey Mouse. I will, of course, be going to see this at the cinema, and I will be livid if it’s been pissed over by Americans. |

I hope this is one of the films Spielberg actually gives a crap about, rather than another revenue raiser/tech hobby enabler

Yes. Or Bobby if you want to be Flemish (given Hergé’s origin)
Tintin is great, and he may be always on the side of good and righteousness, but the ancillary characters he hangs around with are less than perfect. There’s a good mix, and that’s what makes them worth reading. |

If they went to all that trouble for the CGI, why not just get real actors to play the parts?

Looks as if they might be using the comic as the story board - something that worked well for 300 and Sin City. I'm unconvinced by the look of it though, maybe you'll forget that after 5 minutes though. Intriguing. |

Probably because it may end up looking like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-7eEE6dhpwU The original plan was for Weta to do a CGI Snowy and have live actors taking the rest of the part. It kind of grew to a full CGI fest after that. It does allow for the characters to look more like the drawings, and provide a (hopefully) more convincing link to the books than the 1961 film gave. A pretty good ligne claire animation series was done by Nelvana, so doing a straight animation would be retreading old ground. |

how old is tintin meant to be? in cartoon form he looks about 27 with a youthful kinda appearance in that cgi he looks 12

Not sure. In English, he’s referred to as “boy reporter” (though he only ever seems to file much by way of reports). He was originally a strip in Le Petit Vingtieme which was a children’s supplement. He can be traced back to Totor, CP des Hannetons, also by Hergé. Looking at Totor, you will see similarities between him and Tintin. So, age-wise (in my mind), he could be anywhere between 17 and 27. However, Tintin has very few defining facial features, which makes it very easy for the reader to project his own views on the character. I do agree - the CGI does “fix” him to an age more than Hergé’s drawings ever did. More on Totor here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Totor I have some of the strips in a book I bought many years ago. Just looked up the book I have on Amazon.
